Salt Lake Legal Defender’s Association Mental Health Court Coordinator
Description: The Mental Health Court Coordinator is responsible for completing the screening requirements for applicants to the 3rd District Court Mental Health Court (MHC). Applicants will be referred by attorneys from the Salt Lake Legal Defender’s Association (SLLDA) and the MHC Coordinator will only be responsible for processing applications from SLLDA. Mental Health Court is a treatment court serving Salt Lake County for individuals charged with crimes who are Seriously and Persistently Mentally Ill (SPMI). Individuals must have an established diagnosis of bipolar I disorder, schizoaffective disorder, or schizophrenia.
A critical component of this court is the application process where applicants undergo a three-part screening process: a risk-need assessment, clinical screening, and legal screening. SLLDA administers the risk-need assessment and gathers and reviews the applicant’s mental health records before they are sent to the Mental Health Court Clinical Director and the Salt Lake County Deputy District Attorney for clinical and legal approval.
Duties
The Mental Health Court Coordinator will:
· Complete a RANT assessment with the applicant
· Complete all relevant releases of information with the applicant
· Gather all relevant mental health records from all appropriate agencies
Review all relevant mental health records and prescreen records
· Create a review “packet” for clinical and legal screening
o This packet includes: relevant mental health records, a list of all places mental health records were requested from, all police reports and Informations from the cases being screened, criminal history, and any other relevant documents.
· Be available to attorneys at SLLDA as well other MHC stakeholders to answer follow up questions
· Communicate with attorneys about MHC approvals and denials
· Make referrals to appropriate treatment agencies if necessary
Required:
· A bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice or a related field. A Master of Social Work (or an interest in obtaining one) is preferred.
Ideal applicants will:
· Have excellent written and oral communication skills
· Be detail oriented
· Be self-motivated and willing to solve problems
· Have experience working with a forensic population, specifically individuals who may be SPMI
· Have experience reviewing clinical mental health records and be able to identify a qualifying diagnosis
· Have a working knowledge of the behavioral health resources within Salt Lake County.
Compensation:
· Yearly salary of $60,000 + full benefits
· Generous PTO and 401K package
Pay: $60,000.00 per year
