Mental Health Specialist (2 positions available)

Job Description

Position Summary The Mental Health Specialist provides a wide range of direct counseling and mental health services to Marshall University students within the scope of the Counseling Center. This role supports the emotional well-being and personal development of students by offering individual, group, and crisis intervention services, while ensuring timely documentation, appropriate referrals, and participation in outreach and prevention programming. The Specialist also assists in clinical oversight, maintains best practices in university mental health care, and contributes to performance improvement through data collection and analysis. Essential Clinical Responsibilities Conduct client intake interviews and administer appropriate screening and assessment tools. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans aligned with clinical best practices. Provide counseling and psychotherapy services addressing concerns such as depression, anxiety, ADHD , cognitive or eating disorders, substance use, personality disorders, trauma, sexual or gender identity, and adjustment difficulties. Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation, including notes, assessments, and treatment plans within 48 hours of service. Participate in a 24-hour on-call rotation to provide crisis intervention on campus or in hospitals, supporting students and families during emergencies involving suicide risk, trauma, or other mental health crises. Facilitate referrals to appropriate on- or off-campus resources for higher levels of care or specialized treatment. Serve as a liaison among university departments, community providers, MUPD , physicians, and family members for coordinated student support. Attend supervision sessions and ongoing staff meetings to ensure professional growth and clinical quality. Outreach, Education, and Campus Collaboration Develop and deliver psychoeducational workshops, trainings, and events for students, faculty, and staff. Participate in Counseling Center outreach activities, including campus-wide wellness initiatives and special events. Plan, coordinate, and oversee outreach programs supporting the student population. Promote Counseling Center visibility at recruitment activities and campus events. Program Evaluation and Data Collection Gather and analyze quantitative and qualitative data related to service utilization and client outcomes. Prepare detailed reports summarizing trends, key performance indicators, and actionable recommendations for continuous program improvement. Collaborate with Counseling Center leadership on performance metrics, needs assessments, and goal setting. Ensure all data handling and reporting meet federal, state, and institutional compliance standards, including grant and accreditation requirements.
