The Metallurgist is responsible for overseeing metal quality, process control, and material performance within a municipal casting facility. This role ensures that all cast products meet applicable specifications, customer requirements, and quality management standards, including compliance with ISO 9001 principles.
Candidates with a background in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering will be considered.
Key Responsibilities
1. Metallurgical & Process Control
- Monitor and control melting, alloying, and pouring processes
- Develop and maintain material specifications and standards
- Analyze chemical composition and mechanical properties of castings
- Troubleshoot metallurgical defects (e.g., porosity, inclusions, shrinkage)
- Optimize process parameters for yield, quality, and efficiency
2. Quality Management
- Support and maintain compliance with ISO 9001 Quality Management System
- Develop and maintain procedures, work instructions, and records
- Conduct root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA)
- Participate in internal audits and continuous improvement initiatives
- Ensure traceability of materials and processes
3. Testing & Laboratory Oversight
- Oversee quality testing to include but not limited to:
- Tensile/load testing
- Green sand testing
- Review and interpret metallurgical test data
- Ensure calibration and proper use of lab equipment
- Maintain accurate and compliant test records/product certifications
4. Production Support
- Collaborate with supervisors, leads, and operators to resolve production issues
- Provide technical guidance on casting methods and tooling
- Support new product development, including trials and first articles
- Improve scrap reduction and process stability
5. Safety & Compliance
- Promote a safe working environment and adherence to OSHA and local regulations
- Ensure proper handling of materials, chemicals, and molten metal
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science
- 2+ years in manufacturing, foundry, or metallurgical environment preferred
- Experience with metal casting processes (iron, steel, or non-ferrous) and/or municipal castings is preferred
- Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing
Knowledge & Skills
- Understanding of metallurgy and material properties
- Familiarity with foundry processes and sand systems
- Knowledge of quality systems (ISO 9001 preferred)
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Ability to interpret technical data and specifications
- Effective communication across production and management teams
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Odyssey or similar)
Pay: $70,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
