Mid-Level Project Engineer, Albuquerque, NM 25-51-ABQ-11

INTERA Incorporated is seeking a skilled and motivated Civil, Environmental, Chemical, or Geological Engineer to join our Albuquerque office. In this role, you will manage, lead, and/or support the delivery of high-quality projects for a diverse range of clients, including state and municipal agencies, mining companies, and private industries that share our values of environmental stewardship and technical excellence.

You will contribute to a variety of reclamation, remediation, and environmental characterization and design projects — helping clients meet regulatory requirements, restore impacted sites, and sustainably manage natural resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of technical documents, including feasibility studies, remedial designs, and optimization studies; lead teams in the operation, maintenance and monitoring of remediation systems; and conduct functionality review of system performance at Superfund, mining, landfill, petroleum storage tank, and industrial sites.
  • Support senior environmental and engineering staff in and/or manage multi-disciplinary projects involving permitting, reclamation, site remediation, and contamination characterization.
  • Lead and/or support client communications and be responsible for project budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Design and implement field investigations (soil, groundwater, surface water, soil vapor, and non-aqueous phase liquids).
  • Design solutions for mine waste and tailings management, including site closure and reclamation for domestic and international mining clients.
  • Support design and implementation of remediation measures for environmental sites contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, PFAS and emerging contaminants, metal or inorganic contaminants, and/or radionuclides.
  • Develop site conceptual models and support risk assessments.
  • Create design drawings and construction specifications.
  • Mentor junior staff and collaborate with technical teams across the company.
  • Support business development by maintaining client relationships and identifying new opportunities.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • B.S. in Civil, Environmental, Chemical, or Geological Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8–15 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing environmental or engineering projects or tasks.
  • Prior experience in all engineering stages of design-build projects including feasibility studies, conceptual designs, development of construction drawings and specifications, engineering cost estimates, construction quality assurance, and record document development.
  • Strong technical writing, data analysis, verbal and graphic communication, and project management skills.
  • Field experience with sample collection and construction oversight.
  • Experience with site reclamation, remediation technologies, and environmental compliance.
  • Familiarity with state and federal environmental regulations (e.g., RCRA, CERCLA, NMED/NMAC, EPA) and risk-based criteria.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Professional engineering licensure.
  • Master’s degree in engineering, hydrology, or a related field.
  • Experience with mining reclamation, groundwater remediation, soil vapor extraction, or contaminated site investigations in the Southwest U.S.
  • Landfill design, permitting, and construction QA/QC and certification.
  • Landfill gas management/monitoring.
  • Field experience in drilling oversight.
  • BMP Selection and SWPPP development.
  • Proficiency in AutoCad Civil3d for developing grading plans, creating utility design drawings, and managing sheet sets.
  • Knowledge of HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, and HELP.
  • Knowledge of air quality regulations and permitting.
  • Skill with GIS tools and apps (e.g., Survey 123), SCADA, groundwater/surface water/vadose zone modeling, statistical methods, environmental chemistry, or contaminant fate and transport.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and/or MSHA.
