Role Description

We’re looking for a mid-level developer who can help us deliver two kinds of work:

• Content-driven marketing / CMS websites built in Wagtail (Python) with HTML + Tailwind
• Interactive web applications built with React + Next.js

Work will fall within one of these or a blend of both. Strength in one area is acceptable, as long as candidate is willing to grow in the other.

Compensation

• Base salary: $70,000–$90,000 (depending on experience and skill alignment)
• Quarterly bonus: Performance-based bonus opportunity

3-Month Trial Period (Mutual Fit)

All new hires start with a 3-month trial period to ensure the role is a strong fit for both you and Axle. You’ll work on real projects with clear goals and regular check-ins. At the end of the trial period, we’ll review progress together and confirm long-term alignment.

Primary Responsibilities

Wagtail / Websites (Python + HTML + Tailwind)

Build and maintain Wagtail sites: page models, StreamField blocks, templates, and admin/editor experience

• Implement responsive layouts and components in HTML + Tailwind
• Ensure quality on SEO, accessibility, performance, and cross-browser behavior
• Integrate common services (forms, analytics, CRM, search, etc.)

Next.js / Web Apps (React + Next.js)

• Build product features and UI flows in React + Next.js
• Consume APIs and integrate with backend services
• Create maintainable component systems and handle state/data fetching
• Improve performance, reliability, and user experience

Across both

• Collaborate with design/product to scope work and ship iteratively
• Write clean, testable code and participate in PR reviews
• Own features from implementation through deployment/support

Required Qualifications:

• Experience shipping modern web projects in at least one:

Wagtail (Python) for websites, or

React + Next.js for web apps

• Strong fundamentals in HTML/CSS (Tailwind preferred)
• Solid JavaScript/TypeScript fundamentals (especially if leaning Next.js)
• Familiar with Git workflows, code review, and team collaboration
• Clear communicator who can work independently and ask appropriate questions
• B.S. in Computer Science or related field of study

Preferred Qualifications:

• Wagtail specifics: StreamField, snippets, settings, custom admin, editorial workflows
• Next.js specifics: app router, SSR/SSG/ISR, performance tuning, auth patterns
• Testing: pytest/Django tests, Playwright/Cypress, unit/integration testing
• DevOps exposure: CI/CD, Docker, cloud hosting
• Accessibility, SEO, and web performance best practices
• 3-6 years experience
