Middle School History Teacher, 2026-2027 Academic Year

POSITION TITLE: Middle School History Teacher (Eighth Grade World Geography)

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school serving
students from Pre-Kindergarten (including two-year-olds) through Grade 12. The school enrolls
approximately 900 students and employs 170 faculty and staff across two campuses in Suffolk, Virginia.
Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools.

Position Summary

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy seeks a dynamic, innovative, and student-centered educator to teach Eighth
Grade World Geography. We are looking for a teacher who is excited to move beyond a traditional
textbook-driven approach and instead create a classroom experience that is engaging, culturally rich, and
globally relevant.

The ideal candidate will design learning experiences that incorporate project-based learning, current global
issues, cultural exploration, and real-world connections, helping students see the relevance of geography in
their everyday lives. This teacher will play a key role in continuing to modernize the World Geography
curriculum and inspire curiosity about the world.

Vision for World Geography at NSA

At Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, our Eighth Grade World Geography course has been intentionally
redesigned to provide a modern, engaging, and globally relevant learning experience.

This course emphasizes:

  • Project-based learning and student choice
  • Real-world connections through current events and global issues
  • Use of digital tools such as GIS, Google Earth, and multimedia platforms
  • Cultural exploration and global awareness
  • Performance-based assessments and student voice

Students engage in experiences such as:

  • Designing sustainable cities and participating in mock U.N. summits
  • Creating digital documentaries, podcasts, and StoryMaps
  • Analyzing global challenges such as climate change, migration, and urbanization
  • Participating in weekly “Geography in the News & Pop Culture” reflections

The ideal candidate will be excited to build upon and bring this vision to life in creative and innovative ways.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver engaging, inquiry-based lessons that promote deep understanding of world
geography
  • Create project-based and experiential learning opportunities that allow students to explore cultures,
regions, and global issues in meaningful ways
  • Integrate current events, global perspectives, and interdisciplinary connections into instruction
  • Foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and discussion-based learning
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and technology tools to support diverse learners
  • Collaborate regularly with grade-level and departmental colleagues to ensure a cohesive and
forward-thinking program
  • Participate in divisional and school-wide meetings and professional development
  • Serve as an advisor, supporting students’ academic and social-emotional growth
  • Provide additional support through mentoring, tutoring, and conferencing with students and parents
  • Maintain timely grading and communication through school platforms
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with parents regarding student progress
  • Be prepared to deliver instruction in a virtual environment if needed
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head of Middle School

Qualifications

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or postgraduate degree
  • Teaching certification in history, geography, or a related field preferred (Virginia or reciprocal state)
  • Prior middle school teaching experience preferred
