Position Scope

The Learning Specialist supports students with diverse learning profiles by coordinating academic accommodations, providing targeted academic support, and promoting inclusive instructional practices. Working closely with faculty, families, and school leadership, the Learning Specialist translates assessment information into practical classroom strategies and ensures consistent, student-centered access to the curriculum.

Essential Functions

  • Identify students who may benefit from learning accommodations and support consistent implementation
  • Review, interpret, and apply psychoeducational and cognitive assessments to inform instructional strategies
  • Lead meetings with families, teachers, and staff to discuss student needs and recommendations
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop learning strategies, adapt curriculum, and enhance instruction
  • Serve as a liaison among students, families, school staff, and external professionals
  • Maintain confidential student records and accurate documentation
  • Support continuity of services across the school year and during campus transitions
  • Partner with Lower and Upper School Learning Specialists to ensure aligned support
  • Design and deliver professional development related to learning differences and inclusive practices
  • Provide consultation on learning strategies, executive functioning, and classroom supports
  • Assist the Admissions Office with assessments and placement decisions, as appropriate
  • Provide small-group and individual academic interventions, as needed
  • Participate in team meetings, student support discussions, and grade-level planning
  • Serve as a grade-level advisor, supporting students’ academic progress and social-emotional growth
  • Attend and assist with the coordination of field trips, including overnight grade-level trips
  • Teach classes as assigned, based on program needs and individual skill sets

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Learning Disabilities, Psychology, Education, School Counseling, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of five years of experience supporting students with learning differences, preferably at the middle school level
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply psychoeducational and neuropsychological evaluations
  • Strong understanding of differentiated instruction, universal design for learning, and academic accommodations
  • Experience developing and implementing academic interventions, including executive functioning and study skills
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws and best practices related to learning accommodations in independent schools
