Middle School Science Teacher

Open Position: Middle School Science Teacher & Production and Exchange

Facilitator

POSITION SUMMARY

Moore Montessori is seeking a dedicated and passionate Middle School Science Teacher to join our Middle School Team. This dual-role position combines rigorous academic instruction in 7th and 8th grade science — aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSOC)— with facilitation of our Production and Exchange program, a cornerstone of authentic Montessori middle school education. The ideal candidate is both scientifically literate and entrepreneurially minded, capable of guiding young adolescents through hands-on scientific inquiry while also mentoring them as they design, manage, and operate real student-run microeconomies.

SCIENCE INSTRUCTION — 7TH & 8TH GRADE

● Plan and deliver engaging, inquiry-based science instruction aligned with the North

Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSOC) for grades 7 and 8.

● Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs and readiness levels of all

students.

● Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress toward NCSOC

standards.

● Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate progress to

students, families, and school leadership.

● Prepare students for state standardized assessments.

PRODUCTION & EXCHANGE — MONTESSORI MICROECONOMY FACILITATOR

What is Production & Exchange?

Production and Exchange is a foundational element of Montessori education for adolescents,

rooted in Dr. Maria Montessori’s vision that young people aged 12–15 develop best when they

engage in meaningful, real-world work that connects to society. Rather than simulated or

hypothetical business exercises, Production and Exchange involves students conceiving,

launching, and operating actual small businesses — often called microeconomies — within the school community.

These student-led enterprises typically produce and sell goods (produce from hydroponics lab and school gardens, baked items, handcrafted product), but may also offer services (tutoring, campus beautification, event planning), or manage ongoing operations like a school spirit store or café. Students handle all aspects of their business: market research, budgeting, production, marketing, customer service, and accounting. The instructor’s role is not to run the business for students, but to serve as a guide, coach, and resource — asking questions, helping students problem-solve, and ensuring that real entrepreneurial challenges become real learning opportunities.

Program Facilitation Responsibilities

● Guide students through the cycles microeconomy development: ideation, business

planning, production, operation, reflection, and iteration.

● Help student teams manage financial accounts, track income and expenses, and

understand profit, loss, and reinvestment.

● Facilitate daily Production and Exchange work periods, providing coaching without

removing student ownership and agency.

● Connect microeconomy experiences to academic content areas including math,

economics, writing, and social studies when possible.

● Help students navigate authentic challenges such as failed endeavors, quality control,

customer feedback, and team conflict.

● Coordinate with school administration regarding any financial transactions, fundraising

compliance, or community partnerships involved in student enterprises.

QUALIFICATIONS

● Bachelor’s degree in Science, Education, or a closely related field.

● North Carolina teaching licensure in Middle Grades Science or eligibility to obtain

licensure.

● Demonstrated knowledge of the NC Standard Course of Study for grades 7 and 8.

● Strong interpersonal skills and genuine enthusiasm for working with early adolescents.

● Ability to manage ambiguity, student-led projects, and dynamic classroom environments.

● Willingness to complete online courses about Montessori Adolescent Theory.
