POSITION DESCRIPTION: Teacher, K-8

Category: Teaching Faculty

Status: Full-time; Salaried; Exempt

Working Environment: Children's Community School is a fully accredited non-profit, non-public, independent school with a class size of about 16 students. Learn more about this special school at ccswaterbury.org.

Typical Schedule: School operational hours, typically in the building 8:15 a.m.-3:45 p.m or until the students are dismissed. Regular time outside of operational hours for the purposes of planning, grading, and other required duties; Infrequent work requirements outside of standard business hours; Academic year (per contract). Middle School Teacher do switch classes. There are occasional obligations beyond the school day.

Overview

The Teacher, K-8 is responsible for overseeing the successful planning, delivery, and assessment of academic instruction at assigned grade levels and content areas to ensure the successful fulfillment of the institutional mission. The Teacher, K-8 is also responsible for ensuring the safe, effective management of all students in assigned classrooms and all-school events and activities, utilizing appropriate methods of behavior management in accordance with established school policies and procedures.

The Teacher, K-8 serves as a conduit of information between the School and students' families, representing institutional priorities and the best interests of each child. Furthermore, the Teacher, K-8 is responsible for the accurate and timely recording and reporting student assessments. The Teacher, K-8, is expected to actively engage in professional development activities to model continual learning and effectively employ best pedagogical practices.

Duties & Responsibilities

Mission Awareness

● Effectively communicate the mission and goals of the school to internal and external constituencies, ensuring mission alignment for all classroom and instructional activities

● Cultivate an atmosphere of community and compassion amongst faculty, staff, students, and families

● Support families through regular, appropriate communication and assistance in ensuring student development and success

Academic Life
● Demonstrate appropriate grade level and subject area content knowledge, as well as developmentally sound pedagogical strategies and methods, employing such knowledge and strategies to create rigorous yet supportive learning environments

● Plan and execute culturally responsive, developmentally appropriate individual and small group lessons that establish the necessary conditions for all students to demonstrate progress towards and achievement of academic goals

● Employ a variety of instructional techniques and assessments, including effective use of technology, for the purpose of motivating students to actively engage in all aspects of the learning process

● Evaluate student progress and achievement using appropriate formative and summative assessments and effectively utilize assessment results and data to inform appropriate instruction and intervention

● Participate actively in the review of curricular goals and materials to ensure the highest quality learning experiences for all students

Student Life
● Create and maintain a positive social and emotional learning environment that allows for the safe and orderly operation of the classroom and consistent display of an environment conducive to learning

● Establish and enforce behavioral expectations, in accordance with School policies, that highlight mutual respect, cultural competency, and a commitment to rigorous learning

● Intervene, as appropriate, to address any student violations of School rules or behavioral expectations, reporting such incidents to the Principal, according to School policy

● Foster a classroom and institutional culture that is compassionate and respectful to all community members, regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, religion, and other identifying factors

● Encourage student engagement in a broad range of non-academic learning experiences, both as offered by CCS and other appropriate agencies and providers

● Supervise student participation in recess and meal activities, ensuring safety and appropriate conduct

Professional Learning Community
● Reflect and assess one's professional performance, identifying areas for growth and improvement, and actively participate in both self-identified professional development opportunities, as well as those provided by the Principal

● Maintain positive, professional, and collaborative relationships with all colleagues
● Contribute to the overall success of the School through engagement in additional responsibilities intended to foster community and strengthen the mission of the institution

Administrative

● Maintain accurate records of student attendance, including, but not limited to, submission of information through a student information management system

● Assess and record metrics of student achievement and progress, including the timely entry of performance data and completion of report cards, test results, and other required reports

Other
● Other duties as assigned by the Principal or Executive Director

  • There are sometimes opportunities to take on extra responsibilities for grant-funded extra-curricular activities.

Required Skills & Qualifications

● Bachelor's degree required, preferably in elementary or special education; degrees in other related fields will be considered in combination with instructional experience with groups of children

● Regional teaching certification strongly preferred
● Two years of experience leading student groups in organized educational activities
● Effective oral and written communication skills
