Middle School Technology, Engineering, and Makerspace Teacher

Bullis School seeks a Middle School Technology, Engineering & Makerspace Teacher to contribute to our vibrant, student-centered learning community beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year. The ideal candidate is passionate about design thinking, engineering, and creative technology, and excited to develop and deliver engaging, hands-on courses that empower students to become confident problem-solvers and makers.

This is a full-time, 10-month position reporting to the Head of Middle School. Responsibilities include teaching five classes, serving as an advisor, supervising and maintaining the Middle School Makerspace, and contributing to departmental and divisional initiatives. All Middle School faculty participate as chaperones for a week-long Discovery Days experiential trip with students in the spring. Additional opportunities to supervise co-curricular activities may be available based on interest and school needs.

About the Creative Technology & Engineering Program: The Middle School Creative Technology & Engineering course series fosters curiosity, innovation, and resilience through hands-on, project-based learning. Students engage in design challenges that integrate engineering principles, computational thinking, and creative problem-solving. Courses emphasize:

  • Design thinking and iterative problem-solving
  • Physical computing and robotics
  • 2D and 3D design and fabrication
  • Basic electronics
  • Coding and digital creation
  • Video Production
  • Responsible and ethical use of technology.

Students are encouraged to take intellectual risks, collaborate across disciplines, and see failure as part of the design process.

About the Middle School Makerspace: The Middle School Makerspace serves as a hub for creativity and experimentation, supporting interdisciplinary learning and authentic project development. It is one of three dedicated makerspaces on campus, each designed to support students in the Lower, Middle, and Upper School divisions. Bullis strives to have the most current equipment, including laser cutters, multi-filament 3D printers, digital embroidery machines, vinyl cutters, and power tools. Together, these spaces serve an integrated K12 continuum within Bullis’s larger STEM program. Faculty across divisions collaborate to ensure developmentally appropriate skill-building while cultivating a shared culture of innovation and design thinking. The successful candidate will remain current in pedagogical practices and emerging trends in technology and engineering education, bringing energy and vision to the program.

Essential Functions

  • Teach five classes per academic year

  • Duties within the community, including student advising or other extracurricular activities

  • Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy

  • Collaborate with STEM colleagues to further advance department goals and initiatives

  • Participate and collaborate with teachers and other subject area experts on grade-level and interdisciplinary teams

  • Supervise and maintain the Middle School Makerspace which includes scheduling, inventory, room setup, equipment upkeep, and updating (software and hardware)

  • Create learning environments that encourage risk-taking and deep learning for students with a range of learning abilities using a variety of methods and technology

  • Use of reflection and feedback aimed at continued growth in the field of teaching and working with young people

  • Collaborate with grade-level colleagues to develop project-based learning opportunities for students

  • Remain current in pedagogical practices and field-related trends

  • Attend Middle School divisional, department, grade-level, and interdisciplinary team meetings

  • Communicate with parents, school counselors, and administrators on students’ progress, as needed and appropriate.

  • Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standards and provide timely feedback to students

  • Use the student learning management system to provide timely feedback, grades, and assignments to students

Other Duties

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM-related field

  • Minimum of two years of prior teaching experience

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Education or related field

  • Experience in an educational makerspace environment

  • Experience with some of the following Design/Making/Computer Skills:

    • Interest/abilities in physical computing (ex. Micro:bits, Hummingbird robotics), open source hardware and software, video and audio production, and 2D and 3D design

    • Wood, plastic, or metal cutting, shaping, and fabrication, including the use of related tools (3D printer, laser cutter, sewing, vinyl cutter, etc.) and familiarity with safety procedures for those tools

    • Knowledge of basic electronics

    • Robotics

    • Computer and coding experience in any environment, but preferably for Arduino, HTML, Javascript or Scratch, AppInventor, Processing

  • Proficiency with Windows or Apple OS, Microsoft Office, cloud computing (Google Docs, etc.), and other productivity and media software

Compensation and benefits are competitive, with an anticipated salary range of $65,000 to $95,000.
