You're a solid developer looking for work that has context, not just tickets. You want to understand why things are built, not just how. You're looking for an environment where your craft matters and where you can grow into stronger technical ownership over time.
This role sits within our CMS Practice. Your primary work will be WordPress, but we value engineers who think in CMS patterns, not just platform-specific tricks. Experience with Drupal, Strapi, Shopify, or other content platforms signals the kind of adaptability we're looking for.
You'll work alongside our CMS Practice Lead on long-term projects in healthcare, education, and self-development, where stability, scalability, and user impact matter. We're building our team proactively, which means this starts as a flexible contractor engagement. As work and collaboration develop, so does the scope.
You'll build, extend, and maintain WordPress platforms: custom themes, plugins, integrations. You'll own features end-to-end across the stack, not just fragments.
This includes:
Implementing new features with attention to long-term reliability
Refactoring and stabilizing legacy codebases over time
Collaborating with the Practice Lead, PMs, and other engineers to clarify intent, estimate effort, and surface risks early
Coordinating with DevOps on deployments and environment management
Supporting content models, migrations, and analytics logic as needed
Participating in code reviews and helping improve team practices
Occasionally joining client conversations to explain trade-offs and align on solutions
You write clean, maintainable code and care about the systems you build. You learn quickly and ask good questions. You're comfortable with ambiguity and can create structure when things aren't fully defined.
You communicate early when things shift. You see yourself as responsible for outcomes, not just lines of code. You're open to feedback and curious about how to get better.
WordPress Hands-on experience in a real team environment (ideally 3 to 5 devs). Confident with custom themes and plugins, ACF, custom post types and taxonomies. Practical experience with Gutenberg, Elementor, or WPBakery. Good grasp of template hierarchy, hooks and filters. Multisite is a plus.
Front-end Strong HTML5, CSS3/SASS, JavaScript (ES6+). Responsive layouts, cross-browser support. Accessibility and performance optimization is a plus.
Integrations and APIs Third-party and REST APIs, webhooks and data sync. Experience with marketing/analytics tooling (GTM a plus). HubSpot and search plugins (e.g., SearchWP) are a plus.
Auth and Security Role/permission management, basic custom auth flows. WordPress security best practices.
SEO and Performance Strong fundamentals: structured data basics, sitemaps, Open Graph. Understanding of Core Web Vitals. Experience with SEO plugins (Yoast, Rank Math). AI/LLM search optimization is a plus.
Data and Scale Content migration, import/export. Caching (object/page/CDN basics). Experience supporting larger sites is a plus. Ability to troubleshoot performance issues.
Workflow Git, local environments (Docker/Local/etc.), staging to production deployments. Comfortable with documentation and CI/CD concepts.
AI Experience with AI tools for developers (Copilot, Windsurf, Claude, Cursor).
Nice to have Drupal, Composer, multilingual (WPML/Polylang), consent platforms (e.g., OneTrust), work with design systems or Storybook.
We're a Deliberately Developmental Organization. Feedback is part of how we operate, not an annual event. We care about how you evolve as an engineer and as a person, not only what you ship this sprint.
You'll have regular check-ins with the Practice Lead. We'll be direct about what's working and what's not. We expect the same from you.
