Do you have a Juris Doctorate Degree? Are you a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia, have a desire to litigate misdemeanor cases, and zealously defend your client before a judge or jury? If so, consider applying for this Misdemeanor Defense Attorney position in the Chatham County Indigent Defense Unit.

May be hired as Misdemeanor Defense Attorney I-IV with the level dependent upon experience. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience level.

Examples of Duties

In this role, you

  • Perform professional legal services from initial case preparation to litigation in defense of your assigned client.
  • Provide legal representation of indigent defendants in all cases assigned to you through the Misdemeanor Defense Office.
  • Handle every aspect of defending your client against criminal charges, including case investigation, legal research, case evaluation, witness interviews, and strategic preparation for court proceedings, such as motion hearings and trials.
  • Represent clients at all stages of their cases.
  • Use customer service skills as you respond to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Communicate and coordinate regularly with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
  • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Assist other attorneys as needed.
  • Provide your client with a zealous defense against their misdemeanor charges.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school.
  • License to practice law in the State of Georgia or the ability to obtain in a specified timeframe.
  • Membership in good standing of the State Bar of Georgia or the ability to obtain in a specified timeframe.


During emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, you may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team.


In accordance with the Department of Transportation, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders and those employed in safety-sensitive positions are subject to random drug testing.


Candidates with direct and relevant experience may receive an offer of up to 10% above the minimum salary that is posted, reflecting their exceptional qualifications.
