Position Summary

Under limited supervision, the Misdemeanor Deputy Prosecuting Attorney represents Jerome County in misdemeanor criminal proceedings, ensuring justice is pursued fairly and efficiently. This role focuses on the processing, investigation, preparation, and prosecution of misdemeanor cases and related legal actions on behalf of the State of Idaho and Jerome County. The successful candidate will collaborate with law enforcement, victims, and the community to uphold public safety while maintaining the highest ethical standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Review police reports, victim statements, and evidence to evaluate cases for prosecution; issue criminal complaints for misdemeanors where sufficient probable cause exists.

• Conduct thorough investigation, including interviewing witnesses, consulting with law enforcement, and gathering additional evidence as needed.

• Prepare and file legal documents, including charging documents, motions, and discovery materials, in compliance with Idaho statutes and court rules.

• Represent the State in all stages of misdemeanor proceedings, including arraignments, pre-trial hearings, plea negotiations, bench trials, and jury trials in Jerome County Magistrate Court.

• Advise law enforcement agencies and county officials on legal matters related to misdemeanors, such as search warrants, charging decisions, and compliance with victims' rights laws.

• Negotiate plea agreements, restitution, and sentencing recommendations to achieve just outcomes while considering community impact.

• Maintain accurate case files, track caseloads, and prepare reports for the Prosecuting Attorney and court administration.

• Participate in community outreach, such as training for law enforcement on prosecutorial processes or public education on misdemeanor laws.

• Perform related duties as assigned, including occasional assistance with civil matters and/or felony preliminary hearings.

Minimum Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

• Active license to practice law in the State of Idaho (must have successfully passed the Idaho State Bar examination).

• Demonstrated experience in criminal law, preferably in prosecution or defense of misdemeanor cases.

• Ability to obtain security clearance for access to confidential case information.

Preferred Qualifications

• A year or more of experience as a prosecutor, public defender, or in a related criminal litigation role.

• Familiarity with Idaho's criminal justice system.

• Experience handling high-volume caseloads in a fast-paced environment.

• Strong interest in rural community justice and victim advocacy.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Comprehensive understanding of Idaho criminal statutes, rules of evidence, and procedural law; knowledge of investigative techniques and ethical standards for prosecutors.

Exceptional legal research and writing abilities; proficient in case management software (e.g., Karpel or similar); strong oral advocacy and negotiation skills.

Ability to exercise sound independent judgment in charging decisions; excellent interpersonal skills for collaborating with diverse stakeholders; capacity to manage a heavy caseload while meeting deadlines; commitment to fairness, integrity, and public service.

Physical ability to sit or stand for extended periods, work flexible hours including evenings/weekends for court appearances, and travel within Jerome County as needed.

Working Conditions

This position is primarily office-based with frequent courtroom appearances in Jerome County facilities. Exposure to emotionally challenging situations, such as victim interactions or sensitive cases, is common. The office operates Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with occasional after-hours work.
