Job Description:
Assists with performing phlebotomy and collecting appropriate specimens from patients as ordered.
Assures pre-authorization and completes appropriate consent forms (ABN) prior to collection of limited coverage tests.
Assists with special procedures as needed (e.g., bone marrows).
Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining patient result records.
Sends specimens to reference laboratories for testing not performed in-house.
Performs specimen analysis for Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology.
Maintains and operates laboratory equipment, performing daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance as required.
Adheres to quality control policies, documenting all QC activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
Participates in proficiency testing by performing sample analysis and reporting results.
Prepares blood smears and performs WBC differentials.
Performs microscopic examination of urinary sediment.
Records and charts results accurately in worksheets and computer systems.
Processes specimens for send-out testing.
Identifies and resolves issues affecting test performance or reports them to a supervisor.
Maintains documentation, logs, and records according to quality assurance standards.
Verifies and follows up on all critical results.
Maintains inventory and ensures supplies are viable before use.
Prepares reagents, stains, and chemical solutions as needed.
Processes and charts results promptly.
Identifies and bands patients for transfusion, processing specimens per blood bank policy.
Adheres to OSHA compliance and Universal Precautions.
Complies with regulatory standards.
Properly disposes of hazardous materials and maintains a clean, safe environment.
Maintains confidentiality of patient and medical staff information.
Education: Associate’s degree in medical technology or laboratory science.
Licensure: Current state license if required.
Certification: AMT, ASCP, or equivalent preferred but not required.
Experience: Entry level; 0–3 years experience.
Requires full range of body motion, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
Must be able to sit/stand for long periods and lift/carry up to 40 lbs.
Requires corrected vision, color perception, hearing within normal range, and legible handwriting
Work performed in an office or lab setting with interaction among staff, management, and clients.
May require travel (approximately 70% of workweek).
