Job Summary / Objective

The Mobile Crisis Technician provides community-based, face-to-face behavioral health crisis intervention to children and adults experiencing acute mental health and/or substance use crises. Working under the supervision of a licensed clinician, this position conducts behavioral health assessments, safety planning, crisis stabilization, and care coordination to ensure safety and promote transition to the least restrictive level of care.

The Mobile Crisis Technician responds to crisis situations in community settings and supports individuals and families through assessment, stabilization, and linkage to appropriate services. Responsibilities may include completing prescreens, biopsychosocial assessments, safety plans, and coordinating crisis-related services with hospitals, First Step Psychiatric Urgent Care, law enforcement, and other community partners.

Services are delivered in accordance with CARF standards for crisis intervention programs and Summit Pointe policies, emphasizing person-centered care, timely access, risk management, quality improvement, and coordination across systems of care. This position functions as part of a two-person mobile crisis team, supporting crisis professionals by assisting with engagement, stabilization, and coordination of community supports while operating within the scope of peer support practice.

Essential Duties and Functions

  • Respond to mobile crisis calls and provide in-person crisis intervention in community settings including homes, schools, workplaces, community locations, and healthcare settings.
  • Conduct behavioral health screenings, biopsychosocial assessments, suicide risk assessments, and safety planning under clinical supervision.
  • Complete prescreens and assist with involuntary hospitalization processes, including petitions when clinically indicated and in accordance with organizational policy and Michigan Mental Health Code.
  • Utilize trauma-informed and culturally responsive de-escalation techniques to reduce immediate risk and stabilize crisis situations.
  • Develop safety plans and assist with crisis stabilization planning to support individuals in remaining in the least restrictive setting whenever possible.
  • Coordinate care with First Step Psychiatric Urgent Care, hospitals, outpatient providers, primary care providers, schools, law enforcement, and other community partners to ensure continuity of care.
  • Facilitate referrals and warm handoffs to appropriate levels of care, including outpatient services, crisis stabilization programs, inpatient services, and community resources.
  • Address social determinants of health including housing, food access, transportation, and connection to community supports.
  • Assist with hospital diversion efforts, including coordination of follow-up appointments and linkage to ongoing behavioral health services.
  • Provide short-term follow-up and monitoring services as clinically appropriate to support stabilization and successful transitions to ongoing care.
  • Recognize and immediately escalate imminent safety risks to supervising clinicians and participate in clinical consultation as needed.
  • Coordinate transportation and service arrangements when placement or urgent services are required.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and person-centered documentation within the electronic medical record (SPOT) in compliance with Medicaid, regulatory, and CARF standards.
  • Participate in incident reporting, outcome tracking, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team including licensed clinicians, medical staff, peer support specialists, and community partners.
  • Participate in supervision, case consultation, and required training activities.
  • Adhere to ethical standards, confidentiality regulations (HIPAA), and Summit Pointe organizational policies.
  • Support data collection activities for program evaluation, quality improvement, and reporting requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Human Services, or a related behavioral health field required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in behavioral health, crisis services, community mental health, or related field preferred. Relevant internship experience may be considered.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required for community-based response.
  • Experience in mobile crisis services, emergency behavioral health, or community-based services preferred.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based screening and assessment tools such as PHQ-9, GAD-7, C-SSRS, LOCUS, and ASAM criteria preferred.
  • Knowledge of mental health disorders, substance use disorders, crisis stabilization practices, and community behavioral health systems.
  • Demonstrated crisis de-escalation and risk assessment skills.
  • Ability to function effectively in high-acuity, unpredictable, and community-based environments.
  • Strong interpersonal, documentation, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to person-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care.
