Molecular Ecologist

At OIKOS Genomics, we specialize in developing and delivering advanced, customized, and cost-effective genomic solutions tailored to the needs of our global partners.

Committed to supporting conservation and applied genomics projects, we provide end-to-end services covering the full workflow—from sample collection and laboratory processing to data analysis and interpretation.

Our multidisciplinary approach integrates molecular biology, bioinformatics, and continuous technological innovation, enabling us to deliver high-impact, science-driven solutions across diverse environments.

In addition, we actively support the design and execution of conservation genomics research programs, offering a comprehensive suite of services to address complex and evolving project needs.

As part of our continued growth, we are looking for a Molecular Ecologist to join our team, contributing to the development and implementation of advanced metabarcoding and eDNA approaches across biodiversity assessment and ecological monitoring projects.

Your Main Role Will Be:

  • Lead and manage specialized research and development projects in metabarcoding and eDNA, focusing on large-scale biodiversity assessment and long-term ecological monitoring.
  • Develop, test, and refine end-to-end laboratory and bioinformatics pipelines to ensure precision in species detection and complex community analyses.
  • Actively work across divisions (Conservation Medicine, Breeding, and Field Ecology) to ensure molecular data is practically integrated into management and conservation strategies.
  • Oversee the creation and rigorous curation of reference barcoding libraries, ensuring databases are comprehensive and up-to-date for regional and international species.
  • Proactively identify technical or operational bottlenecks within lab workflows and implement solutions to maintain consistency, reliability, and scientific reproducibility.
  • Play a critical role in the success of newly launched programs designed to measure biodiversity at scale across both terrestrial (arid landscapes) and marine (wetlands/sea) environments.
  • Maintain and expand a dynamic global network of academic and research partners to keep the organization at the forefront of molecular ecology innovations.
  • Collaborate daily with laboratory staff and bioinformaticians to enhance data quality and improve the overall efficiency of genomic operations.
  • Provide expert feedback and informed recommendations to senior leadership regarding research progress, technical requirements, and emerging laboratory challenges.
  • Lead the development of technical documentation, standardized operating protocols (SOPs), and provide hands-on training to staff to build internal technical expertise.
  • Support ongoing and expanding conservation initiatives across the UAE, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and other emerging regions.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • PhD in Molecular Ecology or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral experience in a relevant research or applied environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following:

a. DNA barcoding, metabarcoding, and eDNA applications.

b. Development and optimization of molecular workflows and contamination control.

c. Proficiency with both Short-Read and Oxford Nanopore sequencing technologies.

  • Hands-on experience with bioinformatics workflows for sequence processing, taxonomic assignment, and data visualization.
  • A strong understanding of how molecular data can be translated into practical conservation actions and management.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and project management skills, with the ability to bridge the gap between the lab and the field.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required. Proficiency in additional languages is a significant advantage.
