Molecular Lab Technician / Lab Manager

Job description:

SUMMARY: The Molecular Technologist perform a variety of clinical laboratory tests, procedures and related duties. Must be proficient in PCR technology and skilled at pipetting. Utilizes scientific principles as well as technical, procedural, and problem-solving aptitudes for day-to-day laboratory technical operations, quality control, quality assurance, procedure/instrument maintenance and corrective action, test result correlation, and clinical laboratory related continuing education.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science related field or accredited Medical Laboratory Science program required.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a molecular laboratory preferred.
  • PCR Experience (Required)
  • Proficiency with pipetting (Required)

CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE, and/or REGISTRATIONS:

  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Molecular Biology (MB) from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Works in collaboration with peers assure quality services are provided for all patients and customers.

2. Actively involved in the application of LEAN principles to all areas of responsibility.
3. Accurately performs tests utilizing theoretical knowledge and independent judgment in addition to established protocol, techniques and equipment manuals.
4. Communicates laboratory data and pertinent technical information to appropriate individuals in an accurate and timely fashion, including verbal as well as electronic means.
5. Critiques, correlates and differentiates results of tests utilizing theoretical knowledge and independent judgment in addition to established protocol, techniques and equipment manuals; assesses the validity of results which appear usual, or which may differ significantly from previous results or expected values.
6. Assures processes, procedures and functions are compliant with CLIA and/or CAP standards.
7. Participates in instrument maintenance and appropriate document control measures.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

REQUIRED COMMUNICATION/MATHEMATICAL/REASONING SKILLS:

  • Must possess the required level of skills and abilities to read, write, speak, and apply mathematical concepts and sound reasoning to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this job.
  • Must be able to perform basic operations on a computer within the Windows operating system.
  • This position requires problem solving skills, critical thinking skills, and the ability to multi-task.

RESPONSIBILITIES, EXPECTATIONS & STANDARDS:

  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPPA rules and regulations.
  • Work effectively in a team environment, coordinating workflow with other team members and ensuring a productive and efficient environment.
  • Comply with safety principles, laws, regulations and standards associated with, but not limited to CLIA, CAP, CMS, Joint Commission, and OSHA.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • May be exposed to communicable diseases when working in a laboratory environment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
