The Motor Equipment Operator, Class B CDL (MEO) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a variety of standard and specialized equipment used in public works, road maintenance, and municipal infrastructure upkeep. This position requires the operation of small and large trucks and at least one of the following: loader, backhoe, roller, plow, skid steer, sweeper, flush truck, compressor, or other heavy equipment.
The MEO also performs manual labor tasks, assists in equipment maintenance, and may lead a crew of laborers as needed. The role requires availability for emergency response, including snow removal, sewer repairs, and storm clean-up. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Foreman or senior employee.
(All duties may not be performed in every position. Other related tasks may be assigned.)
Minimum Qualifications:
Two (2) years of full-time paid experience (or equivalent part-time experience) in the operation of automotive equipment, including medium and large trucks or heavy motor equipment.
Required:
Possession of a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the time of appointment.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance:
- Operates medium and heavy trucks for the transportation of personnel, stone, gravel, asphalt, and other materials.
- Operates snowplows and related snow removal equipment, ensuring safe and effective road clearing.
- Operates motorized lawn mowing equipment and other landscaping machinery for grounds maintenance.
- Uses power tools such as chainsaws, bush clippers, leaf loaders, and jackhammers.
- Conducts minor maintenance on equipment, including adding oil and fluids.
- Assists mechanics with repair and servicing of assigned equipment.
- Checks equipment for operability, reporting any malfunctions or repair needs.
- Secures equipment for overnight or weekend storage.
Public Works & Infrastructure Maintenance:
- Performs road maintenance, including paving, patching, and asphalt work.
- Maintains and repairs sewer systems, including flushing, drainage work, and pipe maintenance.
- Assists with tree trimming, leaf collection, and brush pickup.
- Removes trash and debris from village streets and sidewalks.
- Maintains landscaping, including grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs on Village-owned properties.
- Supports storm response and clean-up efforts following severe weather events.
- Prepares for special Village celebrations, including setup and clean-up.
- Maintains the Canal front, port, and walking paths (towpath).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Good knowledge of safe and efficient operation of special and standard motor equipment.
- Understanding of mechanics and proper maintenance of assigned equipment.
- Ability to operate a variety of heavy machinery and power tools.
- Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, kneeling, and climbing.
- Ability to follow oral and simple written instructions effectively.
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity for troubleshooting and minor repairs.
- Strong teamwork and leadership skills to supervise laborers when necessary.

Pay: $23.00 - $26.00 per hour
