Pay Rate: starting rate $21.66 per hour DOE, education and internal equity

Job Summary
MRI Assistant / Patient Transporter provides patient transportation to and from the MRI Department, as requested with careful consideration of patient's condition and MRI eligibility screening as guided by the MRI technologist. The MRI Suite within St. Charles Health System's Diagnostic Imaging works to meet the MRI imaging needs of our community and supports the ED, ICU, NICU, and Inpatient Floors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
This position requires regular reliable attendance. This position requires a high level of attention to detail and accuracy, as the consequences of even a minor mistake can be significant for patients and providers. Other duties as assigned.
  • Transports MRI patients to and from ED and inpatient areas via wheelchair, bed, or gurney.
  • Follows established department procedures to accurately identify and transport the proper patient by verbally and visually checking patient identification and communicating with nursing staff.
  • Assists patients in and out of bed using proper patient care and lifting techniques.
  • Assist technologists with patient movement and positioning.
  • Observes patient and equipment during transport and reports changes or unusual occurrences in patient's condition to sending and/or receiving clinical staff.
  • Comforts patients and families, offering support and encouragement with the goal of alleviating anxiety and fear surrounding the MRI process.
  • Advises those accompanying the patient regarding waiting areas, expected timelines, and procedure expectations.
  • Aids with non-patient transport including but not limited to laboratory specimens, beds, and CDs.
  • Follows safety protocols and infection control guidelines. Maintains safe and clean transport equipment.
  • Stocks linens and maintains adequate inventory of supplies.
  • Must be able to work around strong magnetic fields as the magnet is “always on”. Must not have presence of any internal metallic objects such as bullets or shrapnel, as well as surgical clips, pins, plates, screws, metal sutures, wire mesh, or any internal MRI unsafe devices, (i.e. pacemaker, etc.).
Education and Experience
Six months to one year of related healthcare experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred but, on the job training may be provided. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. CPR certification required.

  • Must be able to remain in a standing position for up to 95% of a workday.
  • Sit to stand desks are available to all employees if the workstation has space to accommodate without obstruction to patients.
Move, Transport
  • Frequently assists in patient mobility. May often transport patients in wheelchairs, on a gurney, using a Hoyer Lift or Gimme-A-Lift device. Often transports diagnostic devices and patient care supplies of varying weights and occasionally moves paper/boxes of varying weights, up to 50 pounds.
Move or Transverse
  • Constantly moves about the inside of the office/exam rooms for patient care and to access supplies and various diagnostic/office machinery, etc.

  • Constantly operates diagnostic machines and/or other office productivity machinery, such as a computer, iPad, copy machine, printer, etc.

  • Frequently communicate with physicians, patients and coworkers who have questions about exams, preparations, or other patient care needs.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

  • Must be able to visually see patient to position or assist and identify changes in patient’s wellbeing.
  • Must have the ability to read orders or other communications on the patient’s and clinic’s behalf.
Exposure to work
  • Normally works indoors.
  • Occasionally will take patients outdoors in the event we are using mobile scanners or transporting items to laboratories.
