MTS Laser Systems Architect

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support of NPI projects as they move through the development cycle. The goal is to ensure a smooth transition from R&D to production, collaborating with the PMO and R&D engineering groups.
  • Provide strategic technology and product insights and advice to the Director of Engineering and Sr. Staff of the Business Unit.
  • Provide guidance to customers on product function and performance, supporting the Product Engineering functions as needed.
  • Product development for an extension of a current product. A typical example is a customer specific unit with special testing or an extension of some portion of the operating performance from the current product. Technical guidance to the Product Development teams.
  • Provide high level of engineering response to production issues that cannot be managed by the manufacturing engineering staff. Provide problem solving support based on knowledge of the various subsystems and the design approach of the system.
  • Support product line team as an extended engineering member. Must have strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated success working in a team environment.
  • Identify opportunities and coordinate projects to improve product quality, reduce product cost, and to drive towards a reliable and lean manufacturing flow.
  • Provide insight and support of projects to further the R&D Technology Roadmap, in support of the R&D Manager and core laser technologies team.

Education & Experience


Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree and > 9 years of laser design and/or development engineering experience
  • CO2 Laser experience. LabView Programming, and/or Basic CAD experience would all be a plus.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree and > 12 years of gas laser Laser design and/or development engineering experience

Skills


  • A well-rounded individual with hands-on experience in optical/laser systems, and in at least two of the three noted engineering disciplines – mechanical, electrical/electronic, controls & software.
  • Mind-set to constantly pursue the basic understanding or root cause of problems and to continually improve products and processes.
  • Experience in mentoring and guiding peer engineers and R&D project teams.
  • Strong strategic thinking skills.
  • Deep knowledge of CO2 Lasers desired, with the ability to bring system-level thinking and solutions to technology and product problems.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities, utilizing both creativity and fundamental analytical skills to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with perspective and comfort in dealing with the big picture and business view of both projects and the relationship with others.
  • Ability to work on and complete multiple complex independent tasks within mutually agreed upon schedules.
  • Ability to specify and check changes in a way that helps ensure mistakes are not carried over into the manufacturing environment, leading and mentoring engineering teams in such tasks.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of lean manufacturing and 6-Sigma principles desired
  • Learns quickly and demonstrates aptitude for growth and development
  • Responsive and reliable - Can be counted on by others.
  • Identifies creative solutions/approaches to problems/projects, and effectively advises senior leadership of proposed solution paths and strategic directions.

Working Conditions

  • Office environment and work in a laboratory are expected

Physical Requirements

  • Work in a laser laboratory with potential occasional lifting of heavy equipment or parts.
