Pay is commensurate with qualifications.

About This Opportunity:

Performs a variety of integrated marketing, information, media, and public relations functions in support of broad City-wide priorities, initiatives and specific events and projects, as well as targeted outreach campaigns. Creates, maintains, and monitors content for a variety of digital and traditional communications – including news releases, website, social media, video, reports, and other collateral. Work is performed in collaboration with multiple departments under the supervision of the Director of Communications.


This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 40 pounds of force, manual dexterity, speech, vision, and hearing, mobility for both office and field work in various terrains, motor vehicle operation. May require after-hours availability in the event of emergency.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with the development and implementation of communication efforts such as social media content, to provide public information, education, awareness, and outreach for the City.
  • Focuses on highly detailed work, assists with the creation of copy for other communications products such as employee newsletters, social media activity, and website content;
  • Writes for public information and marketing purposes;
  • Applies professional graphic design skills and creative expertise to produce high-quality visual communications for print, digital, web, and social media platforms.
  • Serves as primary website administrator; coordinates and edits the City's website content ensuring information is current, accurate, interactive and user friendly;
  • Provides support through project management to include coordinating and managing competing project workflow, project timelines and scope, tracking and reporting;
  • Works with external resources, staff and work groups to support production timelines and budgets;
  • Performs various administrative duties to support the department and other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable experience in communications, marketing and graphic design best practices; public relations, communications and social media techniques and strategies;
  • MS Office software including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint;
  • established proficiency in Adobe Creative Products such as InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere or other video editing software, and familiarity with HTML and CSS. Demonstrated proficiency in social media and web applications for communications, marketing and public relations – preferably on behalf of a government-based or high-profile organization with multiple messages.
  • Strong proofreading and document editing skills. Proficiency in videography, photography, and the use of photo and video editing, design and production software.
  • Able to lead by influence, use critical thought skills in decision-making and in collaboration with others to develop effective strategies;
  • Able to gather, translate and synthesize technical or industry specific content into content of interest to the public;
  • Exercise sound judgment and maturity to work effectively with communications platforms.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, elected officials, and the public;
  • Effectively problem solve and resolve conflicts;
  • Strong ability to work well both independently and with others;
  • Accept constructive criticism; handle stressful situations;
  • Streamline processes to increase production and efficiency;
  • Be flexible and adaptable in terms of timing and work projects;
  • Organize and work on multiple projects at once and meet tight deadlines;
  • Take direction and demonstrate initiative, pay attention to detail and possess strong organizational skills.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in communications, electronic media, broadcasting, marketing, journalism or related field and moderate experience in electronic media, communications, marketing, and/or journalism or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of Tennessee.

Physical Requirements:

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 40 pounds of force; keyboarding, holding, grasping, turning, and otherwise working with the hands and fingers; requires standing, walking, sitting and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, climbing stairs, crouching or crawling; reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; standard vision requirements (near, far, and peripheral); speaking to express or exchange ideas through spoken word accurately, quickly, or loudly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels in person, by phone or other remote speech, in large crowds as well as quiet environments; preparing and analyzing written or computer data and operating motor vehicles or equipment; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (office environment).
