Music Teacher (with Mariachi Specialization)

I. Job Overview

The Music Teacher (with Mariachi Specialization) is responsible for providing high-quality music instruction and for directing the school’s Mariachi program. This role combines the responsibilities of a general music teacher with specialized expertise in Mariachi music. The teacher will develop students’ musical knowledge and skills, foster cultural appreciation, and maintain a thriving Mariachi club/group both during and after school hours. The ideal candidate is passionate about music education, knowledgeable in Mariachi traditions, and committed to fostering students’ growth, discipline, and artistry.

Key Duties:

· Provide music instruction in general music and Mariachi, including fundamentals, performance, and cultural history.

· Direct, supervise, and grow the Mariachi club and ensemble during and after school hours.

· Create engaging, standards-aligned lesson plans and instructional materials.

· Organize rehearsals, performances, and community events for the Mariachi group.

· Collaborate with colleagues and administration to ensure a strong, comprehensive music program.

· Promote student participation in local, regional, and national Mariachi festivals and competitions.

II. Key Functions and Responsibilities

A. Instruction and Curriculum

· Teach general music courses including music theory, instrument fundamentals, vocal training, and appreciation.

· Develop and implement age-appropriate instructional plans and materials for Mariachi classes, addressing varied student levels.

· Provide instruction in Mariachi instruments (guitar, vihuela, guitarrón, violin, trumpet) and voice.

· Teach the cultural, historical, and artistic traditions of Mariachi.

· Arrange and adapt music appropriate for student skill levels.

· Conduct sectional rehearsals and small group coaching.

· Assess students’ learning regularly, providing constructive feedback and using results to guide instruction.

· Maintain consistent communication with students and parents regarding progress and expectations.

B. Ensemble Direction and Mariachi Club Leadership

· Direct the school Mariachi ensemble and club, ensuring high standards of musicianship and professionalism.

· Schedule, lead, and supervise rehearsals and after-school practices.

· Select and program repertoire for concerts, festivals, and community events.

· Manage logistics for all Mariachi activities, including transportation, staging, amplification, attire, and costumes.

· Maintain instruments, equipment, and uniforms, ensuring readiness for performances.

· Recruit and mentor students to grow participation in the Mariachi program.

· Collaborate with school leadership and booster clubs on budgeting and fundraising for the Mariachi program.

C. Collaboration and Communication

· Work with district or community music/Mariachi educators to strengthen program quality and consistency.

· Collaborate with other teachers to support student learning across disciplines.

· Engage parents and families through performance, communication, and participation opportunities.

· Attend staff meetings, school events, and professional committees as required.

D. Professional Growth and Development

· Stay current with best practices in music education and Mariachi pedagogy.

· Participate in professional development workshops, festivals, and conferences.

· Seek and apply feedback to improve teaching and ensemble direction.

· Maintain appropriate licensure and certifications.

III. Required Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in music or related field.

· Valid teaching certificate with music endorsement.

· Proficiency in at least one Mariachi instrument.

· Knowledge of Mariachi traditions, repertoire, and performance practices.

· Experience teaching music to youth (middle school, high school, or both).

· Strong classroom management, organizational, and communication skills.

· Ability to work collaboratively and responsibly as part of a team.

IV. Preferred Qualifications

· Minimum two (2) years of successful music teaching experience, including Mariachi.

· Bilingual (Spanish/English).

· Knowledge of Mexican culture and history as it relates to music.

· Experience building and leading a Mariachi program.

· Experience supporting diverse music learners

V. Working Conditions

· Frequent standing, conducting, and instrument use.

· Occasional lifting/moving of instruments, uniforms, and performance equipment.

· Evening and weekend rehearsals and performances required.

· Emotional resilience and ability to motivate students under pressure of performance schedules.

VI. Pay and Benefits

· Salary: Commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications, aligned with institutional salary schedules.

· Benefits Package: Includes health, dental, and vision insurance; retirement contributions; paid sick leave; and professional development opportunities.

· Schedule: Full-time, exempt position with regular school hours plus additional after-school, evening, and weekend commitments as required for performances and rehearsals.
