Job Title: Musical Director and Singing Teacher
Dept/Faculty: Musical Theatre
Location: Diverse Performing Arts Center, The Curve Building, Al Quoz 3, Dubai
Responsible to: Head of Musical Theatre, Vice-Principal and Principals (Scott Marshall and Lisa Marshall)
Internal/External Contacts: Senior Managers, Students, UK and International Industry Professionals
1. Role Overview
The Musical Director and Singing Teacher will play a key role within the Musical Theatre department, supporting the artistic and educational development of students aged 4-18. Working closely with the Head of Musical Theatre, this individual will deliver high-quality singing tuition, provide musical direction for productions and contribute to the delivery of an outstanding musical theatre programme.
The successful candidate will inspire students of all abilities, helping to prepare them for examinations, performances, auditions and potential professional careers. They will be an exceptional musician, confident accompanist and experienced musical director who can work collaboratively with staff and students to deliver high-quality teaching and productions.
Playing piano is an essential requirement of this role.
2. Key Responsibilities
Artistic and Educational Delivery
- Teach singing to students of all ages and abilities, ensuring the development of strong vocal technique, musicianship and performance skills.
- Teach on the BTEC International Level 3 Performing Arts Programme.
- Play piano to support classes, rehearsals, examinations and performances.
- Accompany students during singing lessons, coaching sessions and rehearsals.
- Support the artistic development of students, enhancing both their technical abilities and creative expression.
- Deliver engaging and inspiring lessons that align with industry standards and support student progression.
- Prepare students for examinations, auditions, competitions and future professional opportunities.
Musical Direction and Production Management
- Serve as Musical Director for productions, ensuring high-quality musical interpretation and performance standards.
- Musically direct at least one full-length musical theatre production annually, in addition to supporting two other major productions throughout the year.
- Direct the musical elements of productions, including vocal direction, harmonies, accompaniment and ensemble work.
- Collaborate with the Head of Musical Theatre, Heads of Department, production teams and external creatives to deliver high-quality performances.
- Support all stages of production, from initial planning and auditions through to final performances.
- Manage rehearsals and student performances, maintaining professional expectations and standards throughout.
Operational Responsibilities
- Support the planning and delivery of classes, rehearsals and events within the Musical Theatre department.
- Maintain high standards of health and safety across all teaching practices, rehearsals and performances.
- Contribute ideas and initiatives that enhance the student experience and support departmental growth.
- Foster positive relationships with industry professionals to provide students with real-world insight and opportunities.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across all departments to support the wider vision and goals of Diverse Performing Arts Center.
3. Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum of 2 years' teaching experience in musical theatre.
- Proven ability to teach musical theatre in both group and one-to-one settings.
- Piano skills are essential, with the ability to confidently accompany classes, rehearsals, examinations and performances.
- Experienced Musical Director with the ability to arrange and direct the musical elements of theatre productions.
- Experience teaching singing to students of varying ages and abilities.
- Bachelor's degree in a related subject (preferred).
- Industry experience within performing arts and a strong understanding of professional musical theatre standards and expectations.
- Strong creative vision with the ability to bring scripts and scores to life through engaging and innovative productions.
- Extensive knowledge of musical theatre repertoire, vocal techniques, performance history and industry practices.
- Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
- Hard-working, adaptable and able to work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
- Proven ability to inspire and motivate students from beginner to pre-professional level.
4. Desirable
- Experience teaching BTEC Level 3 Performing Arts.
- Industry connections or professional experience that can provide students with unique insight into the world of musical theatre.
- Experience working within a vocational or conservatoire-style training environment.
- Bachelor's degree in a related subject.
