Job Description

The Iñupiaq Language and Culture Intern provides essential administrative, logistical, and relational support to the Iñupiaq Language and Culture Manager. This role is ideal for a NANA Shareholder who is highly organized, detail-oriented, and eager to learn how cultural advocacy is executed within a professional corporate structure.While the heart of the role is rooted in Iñupiat Ilitqusiat, the day-to-day focus is on the "how" managing the moving parts that allow our cultural programs to thrive. From coordinating meeting logistics to engaging directly with Shareholders, this intern will ensure our cultural initiatives are professional, accessible, and impactful.

NANA will provide lodging and transportation for applicants outside the Anchorage/Matsu Valley area. For more details, feel free to reach out! Internships will run from June to August with some flexibility based on individual availability.

Responsibilities

  • Administrative Coordination: Manage scheduling, document preparation, and digital filing for cultural projects; assist in tracking program budgets or resource inventories.
  • Logistics & Event Support: Organize the "behind-the-scenes" details for cultural workshops and meetings. This includes venue booking, materials preparation, and travel coordination.
  • Regional Outreach: Travel to the NANA region (as needed) to provide on-the-ground support for community events, ensuring sessions run smoothly and participants are well-supported.
  • Shareholder Relations: Act as a professional and welcoming point of contact for Shareholders inquiring about language resources or cultural programs, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
  • Content Assistance: Support the Manager in the distribution of Iñupiaq language materials and the maintenance of cultural archives.
  • Other duties pertinent to the department or unit’s success may also be assigned.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be a shareholder of NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., or a direct descendant of a shareholder. In accordance with NANA's Shareholder Preference Hiring Policy, priority will be given to NANA shareholders first, followed by shareholder descendants.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be enrolled in college or a vocational school full-time and complete one semester of postsecondary education.
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Be organized and have excellent administrative skills.
  • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NANA’s vehicle insurance policy.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors/Outdoors. Indoor: environmentally controlled; requires most or all work done inside. Outdoors: Frequently exposed to extreme weather conditions (wind and rain).

Noise level: Quiet when in an office setting, moderate to loud when visiting various job sites.

Description of environment: Office building with a standard office environment.

Physical requirements: Employee is required to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. occasionally. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel: Employees may travel up to 30% to Kotzebue and/or other remote locations and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including, but not limited to, snow machines, boats, small airplanes, and ATVs.
