Naval Architect – Marine / Shipbuilding Industry

Job Summary:

Alkous Marine Shipbuilding is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Naval Architect to join our engineering team in Abu Dhabi.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for supporting the design, technical development, modification, and construction of marine vessels and shipbuilding projects. This role requires strong technical knowledge of naval architecture, vessel design, marine engineering principles, stability calculations, structural arrangements, drawings review, and coordination with production, engineering, and project teams.

The Naval Architect will play an important role in ensuring that all vessel designs and technical solutions meet safety, quality, regulatory, operational, and project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and develop vessel designs, technical drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • Conduct naval architecture calculations, including stability, weight estimation, hydrostatics, resistance, and performance analysis.
  • Review general arrangement drawings, hull structure drawings, lines plans, scantling details, and production drawings.
  • Support shipbuilding, repair, modification, and marine construction projects from concept stage to delivery.
  • Coordinate with engineering, production, fabrication, procurement, project, and quality teams.
  • Ensure vessel designs comply with applicable marine standards, classification society rules, flag requirements, and safety regulations.
  • Assist in preparing technical documents, reports, calculations, material specifications, and project submissions.
  • Review technical drawings and documents received from consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and classification bodies.
  • Support the production team with technical clarification during vessel construction, fabrication, outfitting, and repair works.
  • Participate in vessel inspections, surveys, sea trials, inclining experiments, and technical assessments when required.
  • Identify technical issues and propose practical engineering solutions.
  • Ensure accuracy, quality, and proper documentation of all design and engineering works.
  • Coordinate with classification societies, marine consultants, and regulatory authorities when required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 3 to 7 years of relevant experience in naval architecture, shipbuilding, ship repair, marine design, or vessel construction.
  • Strong knowledge of vessel design, ship structures, stability, hydrostatics, marine systems, and classification requirements.
  • Experience in shipyards, marine engineering companies, design offices, or vessel construction projects is preferred.
  • Ability to read, review, and develop technical drawings and engineering documents.
  • Knowledge of classification society rules such as ABS, DNV, BV, LR, or equivalent is an advantage.
  • Experience with marine design software such as AutoCAD, Rhino, Maxsurf, ShipConstructor, Delftship, or similar tools is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical coordination skills.
  • Good communication skills and ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under project deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and technical reporting.

Preferred Candidate

The preferred candidate will have practical experience in a shipyard, marine fabrication facility, vessel design office, or shipbuilding environment, with the ability to support both engineering design and on-site technical coordination.

Work Environment

The role is based at Alkous Marine Shipbuilding in Abu Dhabi and may require regular coordination with workshop, shipyard, production, project, procurement, and quality teams. Site visits, vessel inspections, and coordination with external consultants or classification societies may also be required.
