SALUT, Inc. invites applications for a full-time NDE Operations Engineer to begin immediately. The anticipated candidate will work for the Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Laboratory at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The work location is in McLean, Virginia.

We are interested in exploring innovative applications of NDE and structural monitoring (SM) technologies in inspections of highway infrastructure assets (e.g., bridges, pavements, tunnels, and utilities). The NDE operations engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and repair of NDE/SM equipment owned by the FHWA NDE Laboratory. Duties also include instrumentation and data collection to fulfill the research missions of the FHWA NDE Laboratory. Occasional business travel for field data collection is anticipated. The NDE operations engineer is expected to present the best of professionalism, especially when representing the FHWA NDE Laboratory while at work.

The anticipated candidate will join a diverse research team at the FHWA NDE Laboratory. The candidate is expected to fit in a collaborative environment. The candidate shall understand the research missions of the FHWA NDE Laboratory, be fully prepared for safety and risk precautions, and well represent the FHWA NDE Laboratory while at work. The candidate, if hired, will be subject to standard background check and drug tests required by the federal government.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering (civil, mechanical, electronic, or aerospace), or a related field.
  • Effective verbal/writing communication skills to follow work instructions.
  • Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and repair NDE/SM equipment.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment (e.g., a forklift).
  • Ability to acquire certifications (e.g., Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety, American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II).
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 6+ years working experience as an engineer/technician in a similar environment.
  • Proven records to demonstrate the skills in the listed NDE/SM technologies.
  • Good understanding of ASTM and AASHTO standards relevant to the listed NDE and SM technologies.
  • OSHA safety certificates.
  • ASNT Level II or above certificates

Job Type: Full-time

Location: McLean, Virginia

Working Hours: Normal Work Hours – Monday – Friday (40 hours per week).

Job Duties:

  • Day-to-day operation, maintenance, and repair of NDE/SM equipment owned by the FHWA NDE Laboratory.
  • Instrumentation and data collection to fulfill the research missions of the FHWA NDE Laboratory.
  • Report work progress to laboratory manager.
  • Occasional business travel for field data collection.
