News Fellowship

Colorado Public Radio (CPR) is hiring for three Max Wycisk News Fellows.

Max Wycisk News Fellow:

Through practical experience and mentorship, this fellowship is designed to strengthen your storytelling skills and help you produce high-quality journalism across digital and audio formats. You will rotate across news teams, gaining experience in fast-paced daily reporting, creating longer-form audio stories, and exploring a beat of your choice. You’ll learn how to develop sources, conduct interviews, interpret complex information, and craft stories that inform and engage diverse audiences. By the end of the fellowship, you will have hands-on reporting experience, a portfolio of published work, and a clearer sense of how you might pursue a path in journalism.

Denverite News Fellow:

Through practical experience and mentorship, this fellowship is designed to immerse you in local, community-focused, audience-centered reporting while strengthening your skills in crafting clear and compelling journalism. You’ll learn to develop sources, conduct interviews, interpret complex information, and craft stories that inform and engage Denverites. You will gain experience in producing high-quality journalism across audio and digital formats. By the end of the fellowship, you will have hands-on local reporting experience, a portfolio of published work, and a clearer sense of how you might pursue a path in journalism.

Climate News Fellow:

Climate journalism is a rapidly growing field, characterized by a recent significant increase in specialized coverage, dedicated desks at major media outlets, such as NPR, the Washington Post, and the New York Times, and a surge in non-profit, collaborative reporting models. This fellowship is designed to immerse you in climate and environment reporting while strengthening your skills in crafting clear and compelling journalism. You’ll learn how to build a beat, develop sources, conduct interviews, interpret complex scientific research and policy, and present this information in ways that inform and engage a broad audience. You will gain newsroom experience and mentorship that hones your beat reporting skills and prepares you to produce strong journalism across audio and digital formats. By the end of the fellowship, you will have climate reporting experience, a portfolio of published work, and a stronger sense of whether you’d like to pursue climate and environment reporting.

These are not remote positions. These roles are expected to work in Denver upon starting. All fellowships with CPR are full-time, paid opportunities and run from September 2026 through August 2027.

You're self-motivated, creative, and curious, with an interest in supporting journalism’s role in shaping democracy and educating communities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Less than 2 years of professional journalism experience.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of fair and accurate reporting.

  • Experience with using search engines to conduct research and gather information.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and departments.
  • An understanding of how to use tools such as social media to share content.
  • A commitment to telling stories that reflect diverse human experiences, build trust with sources, and highlight issues affecting underserved communities.
  • A valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required as this role needs access to reliable transportation to respond with urgency to news events. Newsroom vehicles may sometimes be available for your use.
