Non-Emergency Transport Driver

The Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) Driver is a trusted member of the community who helps patients access the care, resources, and support they need to live healthier lives. This includes providing safe, reliable transportation for patients to and from healthcare appointments and approved health-related services. This position supports access to care by reducing transportation barriers and improving appointment adherence for medical, dental, and behavioral health services.


The driver represents the health center in the community and must demonstrate professionalism, compassion, cultural sensitivity, and strict adherence to patient confidentiality standards. All transportation services are provided in accordance with grant requirements, organizational policies, and applicable state and federal regulations.


Education, Credentials, and Experience

  • High School Diploma.
  • Prior professional driving experience preferred.
  • Experience working in healthcare, human services, or community-based organizations preferred.
  • AHA BLS certification is required upon hire.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s).
  • Strong commitment to patient-centered care and service excellence.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in stressful situations.
  • Strong attention to safety and detail.
  • Basic documentation and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to maintain boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.

Essential Functions

  • Safely transport patients to and from scheduled healthcare appointments and approved health-related services.
  • Provide courteous, respectful, and professional assistance to patients entering and exiting the vehicle.
  • Ensure patient dignity, safety, and comfort during transport.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Perform daily vehicle inspections (fuel level, tire pressure, lights, cleanliness, safety equipment) and document findings.
  • Maintain accurate mileage logs, trip documentation, and required transportation records.
  • Follow established scheduling procedures and communicate effectively with transportation coordinator regarding delays, cancellations, or concerns.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local traffic laws and health center safety policies.
  • Report accidents, incidents, or vehicle maintenance concerns immediately according to organizational procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of vehicle interior and exterior.
  • Support documentation and data collection requirements associated with transportation grants.
  • Participate in required trainings including safety, defensive driving, HIPAA, and patient service standards.
  • Provide feedback to leadership regarding transportation barriers or process improvement opportunities.
