Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Engineer — Space Exploration Systems

MRI Technologies has an exciting opportunity for a Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Engineer on the JETS II contract at NASA Johnson Space Center. In this senior-level role, you will serve as a subject matter expert in NDE methods-including x-ray inspection, ultrasonic testing (UT), and eddy current testing (ET)-ensuring flight hardware integrity for NASA's most critical human spaceflight programs, including the Commercial Crew Program (CCP).

You will be embedded with a multidisciplinary team of materials, structures, and propulsion engineers, working directly with NASA civil servants to develop and qualify NDE procedures, resolve inspection anomalies, and maintain a state-of-the-art NDE laboratory. Your expertise will directly safeguard crew and vehicle safety as NASA continues its pursuits in deep space exploration.

A typical day might begin with reviewing an NDE procedure for an upcoming weld inspection or analyzing ultrasonic data from a composite structure. By midday you could be presenting findings at an Engineering Review Board (ERB) or an Integrated Product Team (IPT) meeting, working through a material anomaly alongside fracture control engineers. In the afternoon you may be coordinating vendor qualification requirements, providing guidance on additive manufacturing inspection challenges, or representing NASA NDE engineering at a technical interchange meeting. The work is technically rigorous, mission-critical, and deeply connected to the future of human space exploration.

What We Are Looking For

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related science from an accredited institution, with 5–10 years of related NDE experience; licensure or certification may be required
  • Demonstrated experience in NDE procedure assessments, procedure development, and NDE problem resolution
  • Working knowledge of NDE systems and industry standards, including NDE procedure documents and audit requirements (e.g., ASNT SNT-TC-1A, NAS 410)
  • Familiarity with standard desktop software applications; proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to critically assess NDE processes and designs
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary engineering team and participate in technical forums

Preferences:

  • ASNT Level III certification in one or more NDE methods (UT, RT, ET, PT, MT, or VT) is strongly preferred
  • Previous experience supporting NDE development, test, and evaluation activities for NASA and/or aerospace projects
  • Familiarity with metallic and nonmetallic materials and their manufacturing processes, including welding, additive manufacturing, composite fabrication, and repair
  • Familiarity with fracture control, materials compatibility, and design allowables for aerospace systems including aircraft, spacecraft structures, and associated Ground Support Equipment (GSE)
  • Experience representing engineering organizations at government or industry forums, including materials & processing (M&P) and fracture control working groups
  • Formal education or advanced training in NDE methods, materials science, or a related engineering discipline
