Cardiothoracic Surgery NP/PA – First Assist (Locum Opportunity)Position Overview

This role is a cardiothoracic surgery-focused position with primary responsibilities in the operating room (OR) as a first assist, along with inpatient rounding and call coverage. There are no office responsibilities. Call is strictly related to OR cases, with callback as needed.

Schedule & Call Coverage

• Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM
• Night Call: 4:00 PM – 7:00 AM
• Weekend Call: 7:00 AM – 7:00 AM
• Call Type: OR-based call with callback as needed

Clinical Volume & Setting

• Outpatient Volume: ~10 patients per day
• Inpatient Volume: ~5–8 patients per day
• EMR: Epic

Practice Scope

• OR-only first assist role with inpatient rounding
• Typical day includes hospital rounding followed by OR time
• High-acuity cardiothoracic surgical environment

Required Duties

• First assist in surgery
• Vein/artery harvesting (Maquet system required)
• Write prescriptions
• Perform inpatient rounding
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests
• Conduct pre-operative physical exams
• Perform suture and staple removal

Clinical Responsibilities

• Assess patient health status, compliance, and care plans
• Perform histories, physical exams, and consultations (inpatient and outpatient)
• Complete discharge summaries and manage therapies/medications
• Provide post-operative care including:
• Chest tube removal
• Pacing wire removal
• Wound care (sutures, staples, debridement)
• Cardiac rehabilitation coordination
• Nutritional support
• Interpret and integrate diagnostic data in collaboration with the Cardiovascular Surgeon
• Participate in multidisciplinary care planning with:
• Surgeons
• Referring physicians
• Nursing and respiratory staff
• Cardiac rehab teams
• Patients and families
• Respond to emergencies using CPR and ACLS protocols
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including progress notes and care plans

Support & Collaboration

• Direct collaboration with Cardiovascular Surgeons
• Multidisciplinary team environment Experience Requirements
• Minimum 2+ years of cardiothoracic surgery experience

Additional Requirements

• Local candidates preferred (within driving distance)
• Proof of COVID-19 vaccination – Required
• NPDB Self-Query report (within 30 days) – Required

Shift Details

• Weekday Shift: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM + night call
• Weekend Coverage: 24-hour call (7:00 AM – 7:00 AM)
• Maquet vein harvesting proficiency – REQUIRED
• Must be able to perform first assist duties
• No new graduates accepted

Pay: $116.00 - $122.00 per hour

License/Certification:
