Core responsibilities
- Blood collection: Perform blood draws, such as venipunctures and finger sticks, from patients of all ages.
- Patient interaction: Explain the blood draw process to patients, answer questions, and help them feel more comfortable.
- Sample handling: Accurately label all specimens with patient information, prepare them for transport, and ensure they are delivered to the lab on time.
- Safety and sanitation: Sterilize equipment, maintain a clean and organized work area, and follow all safety and infection control protocols.
- Record keeping: Record patient information and update medical records as required.
- Vital signs: Take vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, and respiration readings, before or after drawing blood.
- Essential skills and qualifications
- Technical skills: Proficient in blood collection techniques and knowledgeable about safety and infection control standards.
- Communication skills: Ability to explain procedures clearly and communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals.
- Empathy and composure: Must be patient and empathetic, especially when working with patients who are anxious or have a fear of needles.
- Attention to detail: Meticulous in labeling samples and following all instructions to ensure accuracy.
- Physical stamina: Able to stand for long periods and perform tasks efficiently.
