Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Clinic Manager, the Nurse Educator coordinates the education of patients, their families, staff and the community on the care, treatment and management of those conditions seen at CIBD. The Educator reviews and revises internal processes in coordination with the Quality Improvement Manager to provide best practices therefore optimizing patient care. This role works collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary care team to support optimal clinical and educational outcomes.
Operating in a Team Center Care model, the Nurse Educator adheres to the standards and regulations established by California Children’s Services (CCS), the Genetically Handicapped Persons Program (GHPP), the Joint Commission and other state and federally sponsored programs. The Nurse Educator is a vital member of the multi-disciplinary team.
This role is essential in providing accurate and prompt education while adhering to best practices as defined by national and local organizations with expertise in specific disease states or discipline boards (i.e NBDF MASAC Guidelines, INS, California BRN, etc.)

Essential Duties
  • Patient & Family Education: Collaborate with Nurse Care Managers, Clinic Nurses and Providers to provide culturally competent new patient education and ongoing reinforcement to improve patient outcomes and applying health literacy guidelines. This includes creating CIBD specific materials and reviewing educational materials available from outside resources and updating them as new materials become available.
  • Staff Education: Coordinate the education of new staff as it pertains to their role including onboarding with systems and setting up meetings with other staff to see how the new staff member’s roles interact with other team members. Also providing them resources on disease states, reviewing processes and workflows, providing feedback on time management and identifying/addressing educational deficits. Provide in-services with updates to any new treatments or best practices available. Collaborate with the Clinic Manager and Infusion Manager on maintaining competencies at least annually and with new hires.
  • Community Education: Attend community sponsored events such as conferences, educational sessions, fund raisers, camps, etc. when possible. Collaborate with the Nurse Care Managers to provide education to schools and employers regarding disease management. Coordinate with Physical Therapy to educate schools and employers on safe activities for patients.
  • Process Improvement: Collaborate with the Quality Improvement Manager and other key stakeholders to promote a comprehensive care team model utilizing best practices. Review and revise processes and workflows identifying issues as they arise. Maintain strong communication to foster positive interpersonal relationships within the team. (20%)
Required Education/Experience
  • Graduate from an accredited Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) Program or similar education
  • Minimum 4 years nursing experience in acute care or ambulatory setting
  • Minimum 2 years experience in Hematology
  • Ability to work onsite (not a remote role)
  • Willingness to drive to and attend community events
  • Must have valid California Driver’s License and insured automobile
Required Licensure/Certification/Registration
  • Active CA State Registered Nurse (RN) License
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified
  • HIPAA training
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with adults and pediatric patients
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

Compensation listed is the expected salary base at time of hire. Actual compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

The Center for Comprehensive Care & Diagnosis of Inherited Blood Disorders (CIBD), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is committed to providing comprehensive care for patients and their families with rare, chronic inherited blood disorders. CIBD is a part of a nationwide network of over 140 Hemophilia Treatment Centers that use multidisciplinary teams of blood disorder specialists to provide expert comprehensive diagnosis, medical care, outreach, education, outcomes monitoring, surveillance, and prevention services to people with Hemophilia, Sickle-Cell Anemia, Thalassemia, Von Willebrand Disease, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and other related benign hematology conditions. CIBD is the regional grantee for the Western States Region for Hemophilia, the Pacific Sickle Cell Regional Collaborative (PSCRC) and Networking California for Sickle Cell Care (NCSCC) providing regional leadership, fiscal and administrative oversight, grants management, capacity building, clinical education, technical assistance, evaluation, and outreach to public and private health agencies at the local, state, and federal levels.
