Nurse Practitioner — Medical Director, IOP Substance Abuse(Telehealth, Part-Time Contract)

About Valor Recovery

Valor Recovery LLC is a newly establishing licensed Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance use disorder treatment located in Ellsworth, Maine. We operate at ASAM Level 2.1 using a Therapeutic Community model with full Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT/MOUD) integration. Our program is designed for MaineCare provider participation under Maine DHHS Division of Licensing and Certification (DLC) standards and the MaineCare Benefits Manual, Chapter II, Section 65.

We are looking for a physician who shares our commitment to evidence-based, compassionate SUD care and wants to make a meaningful contribution to Maine's recovery landscape without a heavy time commitment.

Position Overview

This is an independent contractor engagement providing required medical oversight for a Maine DHHS-licensed IOP under 10-144 CMR Chapter 123 and MaineCare Section 65.05. The role is telehealth-first, with an estimated time commitment of 4–8 hours per month. On-site presence is not required under normal operations.

This position does not involve on-site prescribing, dispensing, or medication storage. Valor Recovery does not operate an Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) and has no methadone dispensing component. MAT coordination is handled via referral to external prescribers; your role is one of oversight and protocol governance, not direct patient prescribing.

Core Responsibilities

  • Review and approve medical evaluation protocols, emergency response procedures, and MAT/MOUD coordination policies in compliance with Ch. 123 and MaineCare §65 requirements
  • Provide documented medical oversight of program clinical protocols on an ongoing basis
  • Be available for clinical consultation with the Clinical Director regarding medically complex clients as needed (phone/telehealth)
  • Participate in utilization review as required by MaineCare for continued medical necessity determinations
  • Review and co-sign required documentation per Maine DHHS licensure standards
  • Maintain availability for regulatory review or audit inquiries regarding medical oversight functions

Required Qualifications

  • Active, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license in the State of Maine (or eligibility to obtain via the Nurse Licensure Compact prior to start).
  • National board certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) OR a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC/FNP-C) with documented addiction medicine experience.
  • Active DEA registration (or willingness to obtain Maine DEA registration prior to start) and completion of the MAT Act 8-hour training requirement for buprenorphine prescribing.
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical experience prescribing MOUD (buprenorphine required; naltrexone/Vivitrol experience a plus).
  • Comfort and proficiency with telehealth platforms and electronic health records.
  • Strong understanding of HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and confidentiality requirements specific to SUD treatment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PMHNP certification (preferred over FNP).
  • Prior experience serving as a prescriber for an IOP, OTP, or office-based opioid treatment (OBOT) program.
  • Familiarity with ASAM criteria and Maine OBH licensing requirements for SUD treatment programs.
  • Experience with veteran populations, co-occurring PTSD, or rural Maine communities.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or French) a plus.

Compensation

Competitive flat-fee monthly retainer commensurate with scope and time commitment. Compensation structured as an independent contractor arrangement; all Anti-Kickback Statute compliance requirements (42 U.S.C. §1320a-7b(b)) are incorporated into the formal consulting agreement.

Why This Role

  • Minimal time commitment — structured to fit alongside an existing clinical practice
  • Fully remote/telehealth; no facility visits required under normal operations
  • Opportunity to be a foundational partner in a growing, mission-driven SUD treatment program serving Hancock County and the Downeast Maine region
  • Formal written consulting agreement with clearly defined scope, deliverables, and liability protections
