SUMMARY:
This position works with the treatment and support team within a co-occurring residential treatment program for adult males. The Nurse's primary responsibilities are oversight of medication for the program including medication ordering and refills, checking medication documentation, and initial and ongoing training for staff who oversee the self-administration of medications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides training to new personnel to be approved to oversee the self-administration of medications and documentation related to medications. This includes ensuring individuals satisfactorily demonstrate all necessary skills and competence before approving them to perform this task independently
- Reviews medication documentation completed by non-medical staff to ensure medication self-administration is being consistently documented, making corrections as needed and following up with staff on any documentation omissions or improvements needed
- Provides ongoing training to staff after medication errors or other medication documentation issues
- Checks each resident’s medication stock routinely calling in refills and reaching out to the pharmacy and/or their prescribers as necessary when refills are needed
- Conducts medication counts ensuring documented medication amounts matches medication administration records and controlled substances logs
- Maintains inventory for any medical supplies and over-the-counter stock medications and communicates items to be ordered to management
- Ensures all first-aid kits remain stocked
- Checks any program medications for expirations and ensures expired medications are replaced; oversees medication destruction and disposal as needed
- Meets with residents reporting medical symptoms and triages them for being sent out for medical evaluation and/or care or meeting with a nurse practitioner/prescriber
- Coordinates medical care for residents with outside providers as needed
- Provides health education to residents and education on their medications; facilitates resident groups on health education topics, including, but not limited to nicotine cessation, HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, sexually-transmitted diseases, overdose prevention, medications and other health-related topics
- Reviews health assessments received from outside medical providers to ensure our level of care is appropriate to meet their medical needs
- Coordinates and supports telehealth prescribing services provided to residents on-site
- Completes any required documentation in the resident record according to agency timelines and other requirements
- Responds to and manages any medical emergencies while on the premises
- Maintains current license in Massachusetts as an LPN or RN
QUALIFICATIONS ANDEXPERIENCE:
- Must be licensed as an LPN or RN in the State of Massachusetts
- Must maintain current CPR certification
- Experience working with people suffering from substance use and/or mental health conditions is preferable, but not required
