Nursing Assistant

The Nursing Assistant works under the supervision of the Staff Nurse and is responsible for assisting in delivering safe, hygienic, and patient-centered care in accordance with the standards of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH). The role primarily focuses on supporting patients in activities of daily living including bathing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting, and mobilization while ensuring dignity, comfort, and privacy at all times. The Nursing Assistant assists in admission, transfer, and discharge processes, helps in positioning and transporting patients, and promptly reports any abnormal observations such as bleeding, vomiting, discomfort, or changes in patient condition to the nurse in charge.

The Nursing Assistant provides non-clinical assistance during procedures such as dressing, catheterization, oxygen therapy setup, and specimen collection and transport as instructed by the nurse. The Nursing Assistant records intake and output details when assigned and maintains relevant registers and checklists. Strict adherence to infection prevention practices including hand hygiene, proper use of personal protective equipment, and biomedical waste segregation as per color coding guidelines is mandatory. The Nursing Assistant also participates in cleaning and disinfection of patient care articles and assists in terminal cleaning after discharge or death.

The Nursing Assistant ensures patient safety by preventing falls, keeping side rails up, verifying patient identification before transport, and immediately reporting any incident as per hospital policy. The staff must maintain confidentiality, respect patient rights, communicate politely with patients and relatives, and avoid accepting gifts or tips. The Nursing Assistant is not permitted to administer medications, give injections, handle IV fluids, or disclose medical information to patients or relatives.

The Nursing Assistant maintains ward cleanliness, replaces soiled linen, ensures availability of basic patient care articles, and keeps wheelchairs and stretchers clean and ready for use. The position requires shift duties and participation in mandatory trainings including infection control, biomedical waste management, fire and safety, and patient rights education as per NABH standards.
