Nursing Experiential Learning Manager


JOB SUMMARY:

The nursing technology specialist (NELM) will work with the Peavy School of Nursing (PSON)
leadership and faculty to ensure that the nursing skills lab and simulation environments are
functioning and have the required supplies are available for scheduled learning experiences. The
NELM will maintain, store, and perform cleaning of equipment as designated. The NELM will
maintain, troubleshoot, and repair equipment, including manikins, task trainers, simulators,
audio/visual equipment, and related peripherals. The NELM will schedule all lab, simulation, and
clinical experiences per the needs of the school of nursing academic calendar and community
partner events. Additionally, the NELC will purchase, manage, implement, install, support, and
maintain information technologies (software, hardware, and training) in the nursing education
program that is NOT supported by the UST IT Department. The NELM will support the maximum
utilization of technology and communication through operations management, project
management, and budget planning, to achieve positive PSON education outcomes.


ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: BSN Program Director


Supervises: Student workers as designated


PRIMARY DUTIES:

1. May include, but not limited to, the following:
2. Facilitate the daily operation and management of all aspects of the nursing lab and
simulation environments.
3. Take appropriate actions to resolve nursing lab and simulation environment problems
within the nursing department.
4. Works in conjunction with UST IT, and the BSN Program Director in the resolution of
problems involving equipment, service, communications and support systems.
5. May serves as representative with the UST IT department, UST Facilities, and outside
organizations. May participate in various departmental committees as assigned.
6. Assists with the development, revision, and implementation of policies and procedures
for simulation activity and nursing technology for the Simulation Lab Operations.
7. Assists with the financial performance of lab operations; monitors monthly laboratory
expenditures for efficient operational goals.
8. Provides on-site assistance with the vendors and/or clinical partners to implement
technology in the lab.
9. Assist with Information Technology and other projects using established project
management methodologies. Assist in the development of technology and best practices
to ensure continuous process improvement.
10. Support and upgrade computer/AV equipment in the Nursing department.
11. Submit requests and/or equipment purchases to maintain nursing lab and simulation
environment inventory.
12. Maintains & supports the fidelity simulators in the lab(s).
13. Maintain the nursing lab and simulation environment, equipment, and materials.
14. May be asked to operate patient simulators for the duration of simulations.
15. May assist in training faculty in the use of simulation equipment and collaborate in
maintenance and repair by troubleshooting immediate issues with simulation equipment
and all other equipment used in relation to the simulations.
16. Ensure required equipment and supplies are available for nursing lab and simulation
environment learning activities.
17. Provide recommendations regarding equipment, supplies, and materials.
18. Maintain current knowledge of simulation equipment
19. Operate and maintain audio/visual equipment
20. Ensure an accurate inventory of required nursing lab and simulation lab supplies
21. Ensure supplies are ordered, stocked, and available for all nursing lab and simulation lab
experiences in a timely manner.
22. May serves as a representative with the UST IT department, UST Facilities, and outside
organizations. May participate in various departmental committees as designated.
23. Assists with the development, revision, and implementation of policies and procedures

29. Maintains & supports the fidelity simulators in the lab(s).
30. Manages the clinical request process; organizes and plans the submission reports to
ensure appropriate placement and timely requests.
31. Verifies clinical site requests and student placements with clinical agencies.
32. Other duties as assigned.


Equipment Used and Responsibility

  • Understanding of AV systems software
  • Simulation manikins (low to high fidelity) and system software
  • Multiple task trainers (IV Arms, Foley Trainers)
  • IP Networking
  • Learning Management System or other LMS experience
  • MS Office Suite
  • Ability to install software updates on laptops and maintain manikin components as
directed by manufacturer support.
  • Provides technical operational support for all systems and equipment related to
simulation and lab.
  • Document technical processes and support needed for simulations.


QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:
Bachelor's degree, master's preferred. Exceptional interpersonal skills and teamwork. The ability
to work independently and be self-motivated. Experience working in technology and/or
simulation in an educational institution or equivalent setting is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Basic computer hardware operations
  • Basic A/V equipment and video recording
  • Medical supplies and equipment

  • Ability to successfully:
  • Understand technical information, both written and explained by others
  • Learn new software and hardware functions quickly
  • Assess, troubleshoot, and repair equipment failures and manage equipment independently

  • Work on projects from start to completion with minimal direction and/or oversight
  • Able to effectively communicate with faculty, staff, student workers, vendors, leadership, and other
professionals as needed
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated and takes initiative
  • Able to work occasional events or weekends, as required by SON schedules
  • Work requires occasional heavy lifting of equipment and utilization of advanced medical devices


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands
to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear.
The employee must have the ability to operate a personal computer. May be required to sit for long periods
of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May be required to lift or move 25+ pounds.
Daily exposure to PCs and networks. May move heavy equipment and boxes. May require long hours and
periodic weekends.


SAFETY:
Assists in the creation of a culture of safety and environmental protection by performing work
safely in accordance with departmental safety procedures. Operates equipment safely and reports any
unsafe work conditions or practices to supervisor.
