Position Summary:
Functions under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, interfacing with medical and clinical services. Serves as a liaison between the Director of Nursing and Nursing staff. Plans, implements, directs and evaluates nursing care provided to all patients. Provides exceptional care to our patients through assessment, monitoring and communicating observations to the essential members of the treatment teams.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Adheres to all DBH Policy and Procedures and ensures adherence to TJC/CARF regulatory guidelines.
  • Conducts self in a manner that represents DBH mission, vision and values
  • Provides orientation and training to all new nursing staff on shift.
  • Serves as the shift supervisor for all nursing care in conjunction with the Director of Nursing.
  • Develops and initiates the Nursing Care Plan.
  • Facilitates therapeutic nursing or health groups.
  • Provides clear and complete client documentation.
  • Implements Physician Orders.
  • Administers medication as prescribed.
  • Counts narcotics daily, logs appropriately.
  • Meets regularly with medical staff to discuss patient treatment.
  • Performs primary first aid and determining need for physician notification.
  • Consults with physician and psychiatrist to ensure appropriate medical interventions.
  • Demonstrates leadership abilities, with an ability to communicate with people from all educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates tact, initiative, resourcefulness, a professional manner, enthusiasm, and a non-judgmental attitude.
  • Demonstrates respect and empathy towards patients and peers.
  • Assists with scheduling nursing staff.
  • Ensures Medication Administration Records (MARS) are completed in electronic medical record system and ensures that all narcotic logs are completed each shift as directed by policy and regulation.
  • Communicates with BHT staff and serves as a link to clinical team to provide care to patients.
  • Assess psychological and medical issues, prioritizing and reporting to the proper clinical staff and leadership.
  • Responsible for leading staff and delegating responsibilities in a positive and professional manner in conjunction with the Director of Nursing.
  • Complete medical and nutritional assessments upon admission, chemical dependency and suicide history, documenting all issues appropriately.
  • Assign admissions and ensure admissions and discharge protocols are being maintained.
  • Administration, maintenance, and documentation of medications per DBH and facility policies and procedures. Ensure medications are destroyed after discharges.
  • Promotes restoration of health, patient and family education and serves as a patient advocate.
  • Administers TB testing to patients in accordance with Department of Health and facility and DBH policies.
  • Maintain, adhere to and promote infection control measures.
  • Responsible for maintaining safety and security of patients, staff, and medications.
  • Coordinates emergency medical care for medical and psychiatric emergencies.
  • Works with multi-disciplinary team to resolve patient issues, while also being able to work autonomously
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job.
  • Complete reports on unusual incidents.
  • Covers shifts when needed to ensure appropriate nursing coverage.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
Core Competencies:
  • Ability to adequately perform all aspects of the nursing staff’s role, and ability to train nursing staff on protocols, functions of the nursing department, assessment, patient care, etc. in accordance with regulatory guidelines and DBH policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge of industry standards: organization, theory, principles, quality improvement and change management techniques, financial analysis, budget process and planning, accreditation and regulatory standards, strategic planning principles, ability to assess nursing care requirements based on nursing principles, and scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates leadership ability and related knowledge. Demonstrates advanced understanding or the population being treated as evidenced by proper documentation.
  • Knowledge of medications, indications, dosage ranges, side effects and potential toxicity.
  • Must be able to correctly utilize, read, notify appropriate medical personnel, perform and/or document breathalyzer, vital signs, EKG, NG Tube placement and monitoring, urinalysis, collection cups, pregnancy dip sticks, TB tests, blood draws and process urine drug screens.
Knowledge, Education, Experience:
  • Must be a graduate of an approved nursing program with a current licensure from an appropriate state licensing board. RN preferred; LVN/LPN required. .
  • Bachelor of Science and Nursing preferred.
  • ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing) accepted.
  • One year experience preferred working in mental health, substance use, or eating disorders field.
  • Ability to draw blood required.
  • Obtain CPI certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Obtain CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
  • Must possess a current Driver’s License in good standing.
  • *Eating Disorder Division: Obtain Serv Safe certification within 90 days of hire.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to do the following:

  • Engages in sustained power grasping and pushing/pulling motions
  • Exposure to dust, gas, odors, liquids, or fumes
  • Intermittent lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds, transporting object usually by hand, arm, or shoulder
  • Hand/eye coordination: Performing work using both
  • Working with hands: Seizing, holding, and grasping
  • Able to lift by raising or lowering an object from one level to another
  • The ability to respond quickly to emergency situations, which may involve running or moving rapidly.
  • Frequent standing and walking for extended periods, often throughout the entire shift.
  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous materials, requiring adherence to safety and PPE protocols.
Arbitration Agreement:
