Key responsibilities

  • Obstetrics (pregnancy and childbirth):

Qualifications and roles

  • Education: A medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited school and completion of a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology are required.
  • Certification: Board certification or eligibility in the specialty is often necessary.
  • Seniority: Roles can range from residents who train under supervision to senior consultants who lead teams, manage departments, and mentor junior staff.
  • Providing comprehensive care before, during, and after pregnancy.
  • Monitoring fetal development through procedures like ultrasounds.
  • Managing and assisting in labor and delivery, including performing cesarean sections when necessary.
  • Providing postpartum care and advice for new mothers.
  • Gynecology (female reproductive health):
  • Performing routine and specialized examinations of the female reproductive system.
  • Diagnosing and treating conditions, infections, and disorders of the reproductive organs.
  • Assisting with family planning, including prescribing birth control and discussing options.
  • Surgery:
  • Performing a variety of surgical procedures, such as hysterectomies, laparoscopies, and other operations on the female reproductive organs.
  • Patient care and education:
  • Educating and counseling women on various aspects of their health.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential patient records.
  • Collaborating with other healthcare professionals to coordinate the best care plan.
