OVERVIEW
All Steel Service is hiring for an office support role. This position is part-time and completely remote, and could be ideal for stay-at-home moms (SAHMs) or stay-at-home dads. It could also be a good fit for those who need to work at home for medical reasons.
The steel industry is a niche one and we do not expect you to have any meaningful experience or connection with it. The only prerequisites are: kindness, a reliable internet connection, and a quiet room to work in.
Mathematical aptitude, although not essential, would be helpful because we are often working with dimensions, drawings, and formulas.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsibilities include: reading and interpreting steel drawings, sorting electronic PDFs, writing Bill of Lading (BOL) documents, using Excel to keep track of inventory, data entry, preparing basic financial reports in Excel, and other tasks that are generally supportive and administrative in nature.
WHO WOULD LIKE THIS JOB?
You might like this job if:
- You like being "in the background" and doing work that supports others
- You like organization and fine details
- You like having mom friends at work
WHO WILL NOT LIKE THIS JOB?
You might not like this job if:
- You want to lead teams or assume managerial responsibilities
- You want to talk to customers on the phone for several hours per day
- You prefer work to be "all business" without any friendships
REQUIRED SKILLS
- As mentioned earlier, the only skills we absolutely require are: kindness, good WiFi, and a quiet place to work. We can train for the rest :)
- If you have more of a mathematical skill set, we can give you work that involves more mathematical reasoning. If your math skills are not as strong, then you would do tasks that are less mathematical in nature, although over time you may take on some of the more mathematical tasks (if you are comfortable with them).
TRAINING
- Since the steel industry is a niche one, we will need at least 3 months of training to familiarize you with it. The time spent on training will decrease after the first 3 months, although training will continue in some capacity for the first 6-9 months. Training will be done a little bit each day, because training in long 5-hour blocks is boring and nobody remembers anything from it anyways. You will (of course) get paid for this training time.
HOURS
- Ideally, we want someone to work from approximately 1:30pm ET-6:30pm ET Monday–Friday. The reason for these hours is that we are in the production business, which means that most of our work is time sensitive. And so it is beneficial to have help across a broader range of hours than the typical 9:00am-5:00pm. Although this is a part-time role, we intend to give you work that is important and consequential. The downside of this arrangement is that you may at some point need to work a little longer than the scheduled hours. (But there will probably be other times at which you do not work the full 25 hours. We do not like legalistic mindsets here. It is a 2-way street, and everything evens out in the end.)
NOTE TO SAHMS:
- We realize the steel industry does not exactly scream "woman/mom friendly!" But our office culture is much softer than the industry we are in--we promise! And there are other moms here that you can be friends with too.
- We understand that you may have taken time out of the labor force to spend time with your family. We admire this decision, and do not see it as a negative or something to hide on the resume. We have successfully hired and integrated SAHMs into our company before.
NOTA BENE
- The last time we hired for a similar position, we received over 8,000 applications and it was hard to go through all of them. So, to help us separate those candidates who are actually interested in this position from those who apply to jobs without reading the posting, we are implementing the following "hurdles."
Hurdle #1: include your initials in the upper right hand side of your resume. They can be placed perhaps 1.00" x 1.00" or 1.50" x 1.50" from the upper right corner. Please format the initials with font that is pink, in Helvetica, and has bold weight. The font size should be 10.
Hurdle #2: Submit a writing sample telling us a little bit about yourself. The purpose of the writing sample is to help us learn about you as a person. The content of the sample is more important than how polished your writing may or may not be. (We are not hiring book writers.) Please do not use AI to write your sample, as it becomes tiresome for us to read writing samples generated by the same AI agent. Submit this file in .pdf format.
- Please do not call the company. Although we would love to chat with you, the sad reality is that we are rather busy with our normal duties and so do not have time to answer phone calls. We will review all applications through Indeed. Anyone who calls the company will automatically be eliminated from consideration, as it would show an inability to follow basic instructions.
TO THOSE WHO THINK THIS JOB IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE:
In hiring for previous roles, some candidates have remarked to us that this job seems "too good to be true" and we must be a fraud. We assure you that All Steel Service is indeed a real company and not a scam! How can we prove this to you? Hmmm...that is difficult, because you have not spoken to us yet or seen our shop! Perhaps there exists some type of secret code that could prove we are a real company? To the best of our knowledge, no such code exists. And so you will need to have some trust that we are real people. After all, there are few things in this world that one can know with perfect certainty.
