Job Overview
Publications Professionals LLC is looking for candidates for a long-term temporary position in our client’s office in Washington, DC. Candidates must complete a test of their English-language, editorial, and proofreading skills in our Fairfax, VA, office. Candidates who pass the test may be asked to interview with our client in Washington, DC. The successful candidate will be added to our roster as an independent contractor. The position is expected to last 3 to 6 months.

Job Description

• Read and evaluate reports and other documents to determine the extent of editorial problems and shortcomings.
• Look for inconsistencies of thought, development, or organization.
• Confer with authors and recommend treatment of material.
• Reorganize, cut, or rewrite as necessary.
• Ensure material conforms to organization’s standards for style, content, and format.
• Copyedit documents for grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
• Work with authors, designers, graphic artists, layout specialists, and marketing and production staff members.
• Advise the staff about editing and publishing options, and answer editorial questions.
• Consult with the staff about the progress of publications.

Skills

• Proficiency with at least one style guide
• Ability to develop and adhere to style sheets
• Ability to copyedit text to ensure clarity of constructions, proper grammar, and correct punctuation and spelling
• Ability to fact-check and copyedit references and bibliographical material
• Meticulous proofreading skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word (including track changes and styles)
• Proficiency marking changes in PDFs
• Ability to solve problems of varying complexity
• Ability to work successfully in a team environment and serve as a resource to others
• Ability to operate independently and exercise appreciable latitude for independent judgment, discretion, and action
• Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Background

• Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent knowledge
• Strong background in editing (minimum of 3 years’ experience)
• Experience in technical editing in all areas of transportation a plus
• Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time

Pay: $30.00 - $34.00 per hour
