Ontario City Library: Summer Teen Volunteers


The Ontario City Library is looking for enthusiastic teens (ages 13–17) to volunteer during Summer at the Library.

Summer Teen Volunteers will staff the volunteer station in the Beverly Cleary Young Readers Room for a minimum of two 2-hour shifts per week. Help create a fun and welcoming space while supporting programs, assisting with activities, shelving materials, and completing special projects. Volunteers will provide assistance and important information to Summer Reading Challenge participants while supporting library staff with daily tasks to help programs run smoothly and successfully. Volunteens bring creativity, energy, and a teen perspective that helps make library programs more engaging and meaningful. In return, you’ll gain valuable job experience, build leadership and teamwork skills, and strengthen your confidence and connection to the community.

The Volunteens program offers both short-term and long-term volunteer opportunities for teens seeking job experience, community service hours, and community involvement.

All Volunteens work alongside library staff to:

  • Maintain Youth Services materials and interactive areas
  • Prepare program supplies and materials
  • Attend scheduled shifts on time
  • Act professionally
  • Assist with shelving materials
  • Help manage crowds during programs
  • Support programs beyond their regularly assigned shifts

This is a volunteer position with the City of Ontario. The City provides no compensation for the services performed by volunteers. Volunteers are not entitled to any benefits from the City, including but not limited to Workers' Compensation benefits. The City of Ontario Library is unable to assist individuals seeking placement for mandatory community service.

Monday – Thursday: 10am – 9pm
Friday – Saturday: 10am – 6pm
Sunday: 1pm – 4pm

Examples of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Volunteens include the following:

  • Assist at the Beverly Cleary Young Readers Room service desk volunteer station during scheduled shifts
  • Support children’s, teen, or community programs by setting up rooms, assisting participants, and cleaning up afterward
  • Perform simple clerical tasks such as stamping, labeling, sorting, or assembling packets
  • Use library equipment safely, including carts, scanners, and computers as assigned
  • Follow library policies, procedures, and confidentiality guidelines
  • Communicate effectively with staff, patrons, and other volunteers
  • Arrive on time, complete assigned shifts, and notify staff in advance if unable to attend
  • Maintain a positive, respectful, and helpful attitude at all times

Qualification Guidelines

Must be 13-17 years of age. Must be willing to volunteer for a minimum of two (2) 2-hour shifts per week.

Guidelines:
  • Passion for the library and its role in the community.
  • Dedication to supporting the missions of the Ontario City Library.
  • Reliable attendance.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Supplemental Information

This is a volunteer (unpaid) position with the City of Ontario. As such, the City of Ontario's General Process for employment does not apply to this position.
