Job Duties:

The University Library at the University of Wisconsin–Stout , Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University, invites applications for a full-time Open Education and Outreach Librarian Position. The Open Education and Outreach Librarian is a dynamic role blending innovation, instruction , and cam pus engagement to support student learning and faculty success . The position is a 1.0 FTE Academic Staff position, reporting to the Educational Materials Center and Archives Librarian.

Open Education and Outreach Librarian

This position leads the discovery, creation, and adoption of open educational resources (OER) that support high-impact learning experiences aligned with UW-Stout’s mission as Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University . Serving as a liaison to academic departments, the librarian delivers course-integrated information literacy instruction, research support, and collaborative learning initiatives, while developing tutorials and digital learning objects. The role also advances the library’s outreach through coordinated marketing and engagement efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum / Required

  • Master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS /MLS ) from an ALA-accredited program OR a master’s degree in education , i nstructional d esign , data science, o r related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills .
  • Demonstrated experience providing instructional, research , or technical support in an academic, research, or educational environment.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to professional growth and staying current with emerging technologies
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and campus partners.

Highly Desired

  • U nderstanding of copyright, intellectual property, and ethical issues related to OER and AI-generated content.
  • Ability to design accessible learning experiences using emerging technologies.
  • Experience with outreach, strategic communications, social media, or marketing, ideally in higher education, libraries, nonprofits, or mission-driven organizations
Strong project management skills

P OSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Open Education (30%)

  • Collaborates with instructors and instructional support staff to advance the discovery, creation, adaptation, and adoption of Open Education Resources (OER) integrating innovative and accessible learning materials into the curriculum.

  • Serves as a campus resource on copyright, licensing, and accessibility best practices for creating and using open education resources.

  • Develops and coordinates workshops, tutorials, and web resources designed to support finding, assessing, using, and creating OERs in collaboration with colleagues.

  • Embeds open resources into short-term programs and stackable learning in collaboration with Educational Pathways & Outreach.

  • Explores new tools and technologies, including AI and immersive learning , and supports the design and development of multimedia or next-generation OER .

Instructional Support and Liaison Responsibilities (40%)

  • Teaches information literacy concepts through course-integrated instruction and individual research consultation.

  • Serve s as liaison to assigned departments, consulting, communicating to, and collaborating with students, faculty, and staff to meet their information and instructional needs.

  • Collaborates with other instruction librarians to plan, promote, and assess information literacy initiatives.

  • Develops and maintains tutorials, guides, and learning objects related to library instruction and services in collaboration with library research and instruction team.

  • Participates in library reference services including research consultations and online chat.

Outreach and Engagement (20%)

  • Leads the library’s outreach initiatives, ensuring a consistent voice, branding, and messaging across library communications, web presence, events, and social media.

  • Promotes library services, resources, and expertise to students, faculty, and campus partners through strategic engagement efforts.

  • Uses data and user feedback to assess outreach effectiveness and continuously improve engagement. May supervise or direct graduate assistants and student employees.

Academic Staff Responsibilities and Professional Service

  • Serves on appropriate library , campus, or UW System committees, confirmed by the Library Director/supervisor .

  • Participates in professional development, professional service activities, and library planning.

  • Maintains professional competence in academic library instruction, services, and technology ,

  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of relevant academic programs, curriculum, and instructional practices.

  • Accepts the rights and responsibilities of an Academic Staff member as outlined in University Library policies and the UW-Stout Faculty, Academic Staff, Limited Appointee Handbook.

  • Works on special library projects and assignments as designated by the Library Director or supervisor.
