Key Responsibilities
1. Pre-Operative Responsibilities
Prepare OT before surgery:
Ensure cleanliness and aseptic environment.
Arrange sterile instrument sets and surgical supplies.
Verify patient identity and consent.
Confirm pre-operative checklist completion:
Investigations available
Blood group & cross-match
Allergy history
Fasting status (if applicable)
Assist in patient positioning and preparation.
Perform surgical site preparation and catheterization if required.
Provide emotional reassurance to anxious mothers.
2. Assistance During Surgery
Scrub Nurse Role
Maintain sterile field throughout procedure.
Arrange instruments systematically.
Anticipate surgeon’s needs and pass instruments.
Maintain accurate instrument, sponge, and needle count.
Handle sutures, gauze, and surgical materials.
Circulating Nurse Role
Assist anesthesia team.
Fetch additional instruments/consumables.
Monitor sterility inside OT.
Document intraoperative events.
Coordinate with neonatal team at time of delivery.
3. Obstetric Procedure Support
Assist during:
Elective and emergency Cesarean Sections
Instrumental deliveries
Postpartum hemorrhage management
Manual removal of placenta
Dilation & Curettage (D&C)
Tubal ligation
Other gynecological procedures
4. Maternal Monitoring
Monitor maternal vitals intraoperatively:
Pulse
BP
Oxygen saturation
Blood loss estimation
Observe for complications:
Excessive bleeding
Hypotension
Anesthesia-related issues
Inform surgeon/anesthetist immediately if abnormalities occur.
5. Newborn Care Support
Prepare neonatal resuscitation area before delivery.
Ensure warmer, suction, oxygen, and resuscitation equipment ready.
Assist pediatrician/neonatal team during newborn stabilization.
Facilitate early skin-to-skin contact when feasible.
6. Post-Operative Responsibilities
Assist in transferring mother safely to recovery room.
Monitor immediate postoperative condition.
Ensure documentation completion.
Prepare OT for next case.
7. Infection Control & Sterilization
Maintain strict aseptic practices.
Follow sterilization protocols.
Ensure proper biomedical waste segregation.
Monitor sterile supplies and expiry dates.
8. Documentation
Maintain OT nursing records.
Complete surgical safety checklist (WHO checklist).
Record instrument counts and operative details.
Document medications and fluids administered.
9. Patient-Centered Maternity Care
(Especially important in natural-birth–focused hospitals)
Maintain calm and respectful environment.
Support gentle cesarean practices when planned.
Encourage partner involvement if hospital policy allows.
Promote delayed cord clamping and early breastfeeding when appropriate.
Qualifications
B.Sc Nursing / GNM Nursing
Valid Nursing Council Registration
OT experience preferred (especially obstetrics)
BLS & Neonatal Resuscitation training desirable
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: ₹12,000.00 - ₹18,000.00 per month
