Operational Technology Trainer

The OT Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting all plant-floor operational technology systems. This includes certified weighing systems, labeling systems, metal detectors, X-ray systems, control systems, industrial computers, and supporting network infrastructure.

This position bridges Information Technology (IT) and Operations Technology (OT) and performs necessary repairs, preventive maintenance, documentation, and system improvements on both standalone and plant-wide systems. The OT Technician works closely with Maintenance, Engineering, PLC programmers, IT staff, Production, and USDA personnel to ensure compliance, safety, reliability, and production uptime.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This list is not intended to be all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned.

Scale, Inspection, and Compliance Systems

  • Maintain, repair, calibrate, and certify all plant scales including bench, combo, motion, rail, and portable scales.
  • Perform daily and periodic scale checks and preventive maintenance.
  • Maintain all certified test weights in the plant.
  • Maintain all metal detectors and X-ray inspection systems, including mechanical and electrical components.
  • Maintain all weigh-price labeling systems (manual and automated).
  • Maintain Carlisle scale systems, carts, and enclosures.
  • Pass and maintain the Iowa Weights and Measures Registered Service Exam (company paid).
  • Follow all requirements of NIST Handbook 44.
  • Operate-related testing equipment including scale simulators and multimeters.
  • Operate fork trucks, walkies, and aerial lifts as required.
  • Maintain and support plant-floor control systems and industrial PCs.
  • Assist Maintenance and PLC programmers with diagnosing and troubleshooting PLC systems, including but not limited to:
    • RSLogix 500 / 5000
    • Studio 5000
    • FactoryTalk SE / ME
    • Ignition
    • Wonderware
    • Siemens controls
  • Support and maintain VFDs and associated control components.
  • Collect, document, back up, and restore all control parameter settings.
  • Assist with development of upgrade plans for obsolete controls.
  • Improve existing control systems for reliability and maintenance friendliness.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues on automated equipment.
  • Maintain computers, servers, application servers, SQL servers, and users associated with:
    • Ignition
    • Carlisle
    • Pyramid
    • Bartender labeling systems
    • Auto-Fom systems
  • Maintain plant labeling systems (Bellmark, Sato, Datamax, Code Pack, Bizerba).
  • Maintain Avigilon camera and door access systems.
  • Support trolley vision systems and WMS (cooler sortation) systems.
  • Maintain plant network infrastructure including IDFs, MDF, switches, controllers, and cabling.
  • Pull and terminate communication cables to equipment.
  • Document, configure, and troubleshoot LAN/WAN hardware and performance.
  • Maintain security requirements on automated and plant-floor equipment.
  • Support Office IT systems when required.

Maintenance, Projects, and Documentation

  • Perform mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and basic fabrication work when directed (including cutting and welding).
  • Assist with installation of new systems and reconditioning of existing systems.
  • Assist with scheduling, preparation, installation, and service parts inventory.
  • Write and maintain OPLs, SOPs, and technical documentation.
  • Maintain electrical diagrams and system documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance to support production throughput, efficiency, safety, and cost reduction.
  • Work with Engineering to document and standardize process improvements.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma with course work in skilled crafts preferred, or three (3) years of experience using mechanical or other related skills; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management and employees using plant systems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language such as safety files, standard operating procedures, operating and maintenance instructions. Must be able to effectively communicate with USDA, production and management personnel. Bilingual skills a plus.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply mathematical applications to practical situations. Demonstrated ability to understand basic statistics for process control.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written and/or verbal form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to use computers and all standard programs used by the industry and the ability to learn and effectively use any and all other computer programs that are or will be made available.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to move about the facility. The employee is required to sit; use hands and fingers to handle or feel/hold objects; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; speak; hear taste and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to cold/hot and/or humid conditions. During construction phase, will be exposed to all outdoor elements and dust and odors typically associated with building construction. Will frequently work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, cold/hot temperature and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The work environment includes climate extremes found in all areas of plant operations.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: The hours and days of work are established as needed by operations and at the discretion of management and may be changed (increased or decreased) by management as required. May be required to work some weekends and be part of an on-call rotation.
