Operations Director

Operations Director

Our Company

Hi, we're kin+kind! We love making natural and affordable pet care that's not just good for animals, but also the world we share with them. That's why we're on a mission to clean up pet products.

We know that natural works better. But that's not enough. Truly clean pet care needs to be responsibly sourced, organically grown, ethically crafted, and made to protect our pets and planet. Our fully transparent process lets pet parents feel confident in every aspect of our products.

Our team of clever humans include veterinary, formulation, and plant experts who create advanced plant technologies from the ground up. We use ingredients that are USDA organic, free from GMO's and harmful chemicals, and mixed by hand here in the USA by a team paid a responsible, living wage.

As a startup, we offer a unique opportunity for talented people to tackle a broad portfolio of strategic challenges. You'll be excited by the chance to put your mark on a brand growing rapidly both nationally and internationally. Learn more at kin-kind.com.

The Role

As Operations Director, you lead the strategy, performance, and continuous improvement of our manufacturing and warehouse operations — spanning production, fulfillment, logistics, and supply chain. You use lean operating principles and data-driven analysis to design better systems, drive productivity, and build a high-performing team.

This is a leadership role. You'll partner with the Fulfillment Supervisor (and future Production Supervisor) to translate strategy into execution on the floor, while you focus on planning, supplier relationships, performance metrics, process design, and team development. You motivate, mentor, and coach your team to achieve the highest levels of safety, quality, attendance, and performance.

The scope at a glance:

  • 7,000 sq ft facility, single shift (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
  • 30,000–50,000 units shipped per month across ~30 SKUs
  • $1M+ annual materials purchasing budget
  • Team of 9: Fulfillment Supervisor, Fulfillment Coordinator, Quality Coordinator, 5 Production Crew, and a Facilities/Janitorial team member
  • Reports directly to the Owner

Responsibilities

  • Manage manufacturing operations through analysis, performance metrics, and goals
  • Review production workflow and output to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Design and implement process changes to increase productivity, improve product quality, and reduce waste
  • Provide weekly updates to the Owner on lean initiatives, KPIs, and process improvements
  • Evaluate production processes and equipment to increase efficiency and optimize facility layout
  • Lead, coach, and develop the operations team; build supervisor capability so the floor runs well without your direct involvement
  • Supply Chain Management: own the ordering and RFQ process to secure competitive pricing on all materials, packaging, and freight; partner with the Bookkeeping Team to maintain accurate inventory of finished goods, received supplies, and inputs on hand
  • Approve operating purchases per established vendor agreements; capital expenditures over $10,000 require Owner approval

Required Qualifications

You care about our mission, are excited by challenging projects, and thrive in a small team environment. Now for the nitty gritty:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required; preference for Engineering, Operations, or Supply Chain
  • Experience: 5+ years in manufacturing, fulfillment, operations, or supply chain, including 2+ years leading and developing teams
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing operations, warehousing, supply chain, and distribution
  • Excellent computer skills, including expertise in Fishbowl (or similar manufacturing management software) and Excel; familiarity with QuickBooks
  • Experience with manufacturing technology, processes, and principles; knowledge of Six Sigma, lean manufacturing, ISO 9001, or equivalent is preferred
  • Bonus: experience with third-party certification for Good Manufacturing Practices and USDA organic / biobased programs
  • Ability to inspire passion and commitment, and to lead operational and cultural change initiatives
  • Demonstrated track record building cohesive teams and positive work environments
  • Resourceful, solution-oriented, and energized by contributing to something meaningful
