In this vital role, you will assist ophthalmologists in delivering exceptional eye care services, ensuring smooth clinic operations, and providing compassionate support to patients throughout their visit. Your technical skills and knowledge of ophthalmology will contribute to accurate diagnostics and effective treatment plans, all while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and confidentiality.
Responsibilities
- Perform patient intake procedures, including collecting medical histories, verifying insurance information, and updating electronic medical records (EMR) systems such as Epic.
- Measure vital signs and perform basic ophthalmic assessments to assist in diagnosing eye conditions.
- Prepare patients for examinations by explaining procedures, ensuring comfort, and maintaining a welcoming environment.
- Conduct various ophthalmic tests such as visual acuity assessments, intraocular pressure measurements, and slit-lamp examinations using aseptic technique.
- Assist ophthalmologists during exams and minor procedures, ensuring all instruments are sterile and properly handled.
- Manage medical records with accuracy, adhering to HIPAA regulations to protect patient privacy.
- Support front desk operations by scheduling appointments, verifying insurance coverage, and handling patient inquiries with professionalism.
- Maintain clinic supplies, ensure proper inventory levels, and assist with retail sales of optical products when applicable.
- Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy, physiology related to the eye, and medical terminology to facilitate effective communication within the healthcare team.
- Utilize EMR systems such as Nextech for documentation, billing, coding, and reporting purposes efficiently.
Qualifications
- Prior experience in a medical office setting or ophthalmology clinic is highly preferred; familiarity with optical experience is a plus.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology related to the eye, and ophthalmology practices.
- Proficiency in using EMR systems like Epic or similar platforms for documentation and billing processes.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
- Experience with intake procedures, vital signs measurement, and patient care techniques including aseptic technique.
- Ability to perform clinical tasks such as visual acuity testing, intraocular pressure measurement, and basic ocular assessments accurately.
- Excellent communication skills for front desk duties including scheduling appointments and managing patient interactions.
- Basic retail math skills for optical product sales; previous retail or sales experience is advantageous but not required.
