Ophthalmology Billing Specialist

Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Ophthalmology Billing Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in medical billing and coding within ophthalmology, with expertise in full cycle billing processes, insurance claims, and patient accounts. As an essential member of our practice, you will ensure accurate billing, efficient collections, payment posting, and compliance with coding standards to support the financial health of our organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and submit insurance claims for ophthalmology and optometry services
  • Accurately code diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, with strong knowledge of ophthalmology-specific codes
  • Handle billing for surgical procedures, diagnostics, injections, and imaging (e.g., OCT, visual fields)
  • Review and resolve claim denials, underpayments, and rejections
  • Post payments, adjustments, and patient balances accurately
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits when needed
  • Communicate with insurance carriers to resolve billing issues
  • Work collaboratively with front desk, clinical staff, and providers to ensure clean claims
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA and payer regulations
  • Assist with patient billing questions as needed

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of medical billing experience, ophthalmology-specific experience strongly preferred
  • Solid understanding of ophthalmology procedures and modifiers (e.g., -26, -TC, -RT/-LT, global periods)
  • Experience with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers
  • Proficiency with EHR, practice management, and clearinghouse systems
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Professional Biller (CPB) or Certified Ophthalmic Coding Specialist (COCS)
  • Familiarity with surgical and ASC billing
  • Experience working in a multi-provider ophthalmology practice

Pay: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour
