Duties
- Assist orthodontists during procedures such as bracket placement, wire adjustments, and appliance fittings using four-handed dentistry techniques to maximize efficiency.
- Prepare treatment rooms by sterilizing instruments, setting up supplies, and ensuring all equipment such as X-ray machines and 3D scanners are ready for use.
- Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays), including panoramic and cephalometric images, adhering strictly to infection control and aseptic techniques.
- Manage electronic medical records (EMR systems) like Eaglesoft, Dentrix, or Epic to document patient information accurately while maintaining HIPAA compliance.
- Support patients by explaining procedures, taking vital signs, and assisting with pediatric dentistry needs to ensure comfort and understanding.
- Handle administrative duties such as scheduling appointments with the dental receptionist, updating medical documentation, and managing medical records efficiently.
- Maintain a clean and organized clinical environment following infection control protocols, including proper disposal of biohazard materials.
- Assist with medical imaging procedures and ensure all dental terminology is correctly used for clear communication within the team.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a dental assistant in a fast-paced dental clinic environment, preferably with orthodontic or pediatric dentistry exposure.
- Strong knowledge of dental assisting procedures, anatomy, dental terminology, infection control practices, and aseptic techniques.
- Proficiency in EMR systems such as Eaglesoft, Dentrix, or Epic; familiarity with medical coding and documentation is a plus.
- Ability to operate dental equipment including X-ray machines, 3D scanners, and other medical imaging tools safely and effectively.
- Excellent communication skills to explain procedures clearly to patients of all ages while demonstrating empathy and professionalism.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure patient privacy and data security at all times.
- Certification in radiography (X-ray certification) required; additional certifications in pediatric dentistry or prosthodontics are advantageous.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask efficiently in a busy clinical setting while maintaining high standards of infection control and aseptic technique.
