What an orthodontist does
- Specialized care: Orthodontists are dentists who have completed an extra two to three years of full-time university training.
- Corrects irregularities: They address dental and facial problems, including crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and issues with jaw alignment.
- Improves function and aesthetics: The goal is to improve the overall function of the bite and the appearance of the smile.
- Uses various appliances: They use a range of tools like metal braces, ceramic braces, and clear aligners (like Invisalign) to gradually move teeth and jaws into proper position.
- Diagnoses and treats: They diagnose and treat problems related to the position, alignment, or spacing of teeth and the jaw.
When to see an orthodontist
- Visible signs: Protruding or crowded teeth are clear indicators for needing orthodontic treatment.
- Bite problems: Difficulty closing your mouth properly or noises from your jaw when it moves can be signs of a bite issue.
- Speech and chewing issues: Problems with speech, or frequently chewing on your tongue or cheeks, may signal the need for an evaluation.
- General dentist referral: A general dentist may refer you to an orthodontist for specialized, complex alignment issues.
