Job Brief

The Field Engineer will serve Central Texas area with vehicle travel from the San Antonio Engineering Office.

The OSP (Outside Plant) Field Engineer supports engineering services through the detailed collection of information from the job site. This position requires rapidly obtaining a working knowledge in all technical aspects of OSP fiber and copper networks. The successful candidate is responsible for identifying existing field design and layout of OSP telecommunications network to include aerial, buried, and underground fiber network design and layout, underground conduit, manhole/handhole, building entrance, and riser facilities. Telecommunications systems are often located near high voltage power systems, and the trainee must learn to identify and work safely in proximity to such systems.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Acquire field data to be used for designing network routes.
  • Identify optimum path for extending OSP Facilities
  • Provide detailed field notes to allow construction work prints to be generated in CAD.
  • Capable of managing own workload and prioritizing multiple field engineering assignments.

Qualifications/Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED) required OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant work experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the essential duties of the position
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in telecommunications/telecom/Power construction industry
  • Knowledge of outside plant activities (Fiber and Copper Cable Design, Pole Line Construction, Conduit System design)
  • Ability to read and understand as built prints and be able to identify conflicts with existing outside plant facilities, select routing of lines and equipment required for projects.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Good organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to learn new technical systems and tools.
  • Ability to work safely in high traffic areas, public walkways, and right of way.

  • Ability to work outdoors majority of the time.
  • Ability to travel the Central Texas region when needed.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen post offer
  • Must possess a valid driver license and a safe driving record throughout the course of employment

Physical Requirements:
  • Requires walking 2-4 miles per day.
  • Works outside extensively and may be exposed to all types of weather, such as heat, cold, sun, rain, and other weather conditions.
  • May carry equipment such as GPS unit, measuring stick, measuring wheel, and other handheld devices weighing 5-20 lbs.
  • May be required to read engineering designs which use color coding to denote telecom routes.
